Röyhelöhuntukurssiviikonloppu on nyt takanapäin ja ainakin näin opettajan näkökulmasta se oli varsin onnistunut. Meillä oli parisenkymmentä taitavaa ja kiinnostunutta oppilasta. Piian kanssa oli hauskaa opettaa yhdessä! Viikonlopun aikana käytiin kiinnostavia keskusteluja (aiheesta ja sen vierestä), saatiin ideoita ja kehiteltiin uusia röyhelöhuntuteorioita joista joitakin ehdittiin samalla testata käytännössäkin. Kiitos kaikille osallistujille ja erityisesti Kristiinalle järjestelyistä!
Kurssi alkoi teoria- ja kuvakatsauksella huntujen historiaan, tietolähteisiin ja tyyppeihin. Siinä muuten korvaamaton lähde oli Isis Sturtewagenin tutkimus ja typologiat. Sen jälkeen kurssilaisille opetettiin sekä S- että hunajakennoröyhelön valmistusta. Sunnuntaina jatkettiin röyhelöpalojen parissa ja demosin hunnun pukemista. Iltapäivällä Jenni tuli pitämään maanmainiota työpajaa tärkin keittämisestä. Koepaloja tärkättiin ja kokeiltiin yhtä sun toista. Tulokset olivat hienoja.
Tuntui siltä, että molemmat Piian kanssa kurssille asettamamme opetustavoitteet täyttyivät. Kurssilaisille jäi toivottavasti mieleen erilaisten huntutyyppien ja röyhelöiden moninaisuus. Se, ettei ole vain yhtä tapaa ja mallia. Toisen tavoitteemme toteutumisen tiivisti kurssin loppumetreillä Minttu, joka totesi ”Hei, näitä huntujahan voi ihan oikeasti tehdä”.

The frilled veil course weekend is over and done with and it was quite a success, at least from a teachers point of view. We had about 20 skillful and very interested students. And it was fun teaching together with Piia! We shared so many interesting discussions, came up with new ideas and even got to try out some theories. Thank you to everone that participated, and a big thanks to Kristiina for the all the organizing!
The course started with a theory bit with pictures and some history of frilled veils, sources and different types. This was all made possible because of the fantastic research and typologies done by Isis Sturtewagen. After that we taught a how-to of the S-frill and the honeycomb. On Sunday we continued with the frills and I did a little show and tell on how I wear (pin on) my veil. In the afternoon Jenni came over and hosted her excellent workshop on how to make starch and we starched some of the frills that had been finished. Impressive results, I say.
I feel like we reached both the goals Piia and I set for the course: the participants got an idea of the variety of veils and frills, that there is not only one type and one way. And then there is what Minttu said today at the very end of the course: ” Hey you can actually really make these kind of veils”

Is there any chance of a recipe for how to make the starch?

Jenni will be doing her class on starch in Sweden later this year, we’ll see if there is a possibility to publish some stuff in english after that!

I’m writing a paper for a conference in Washington now about 15th century frilled veils :) the last word about frilled veils has not been said yet, i think! the subject i hope will keep facinating people for some more time :)
The paper for Washington sounds great, especially since the 15th century is sort of trending here now. I’ll have to check in with Piia on what we’ll do with our experiments. Mostly we did s-frills in different sizes and amounts of layers, some honeycomb ones and an O-frill. We are having a frilled veil-gettogether in Turku Medieval market in the summer and I think it will be mega-interesting to see how the different theories and ideas have worked out and turned into veils. The first veil is already finished by one of our students and it looks really good!
Well, thanks to you wonderful people, now biggest problem in making a frilled veil is not HOW, but HOW MANY and what kind of veil… so also on my behalf : Thank you !!!
