T\u00e4n\u00e4 kev\u00e4\u00e4n\u00e4 ty\u00f6n alla on ollut mekko joka on v\u00e4rilt\u00e4\u00e4n vanhaa roosaa. Ompelut\u00f6it\u00e4 on kovasti haitannut ty\u00f6, joten kaikki on edistynyt hyvin pikkuhiljaa ja spurtti kerrallan.<\/p>\n

Uuden mekkoprojektin inspiraationa ja tavoitteena on t\u00e4m\u00e4 Blanche Bradstonen <\/a>(n. 1370) hautamuistomerkki. Siin\u00e4 vieh\u00e4tt\u00e4\u00e4 mekon v\u00e4h\u00e4eleinen mutta kaunis malli ja se, ett\u00e4 sit\u00e4 voi k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 vaihdellen joko v\u00e4li- tai p\u00e4\u00e4llimm\u00e4isen\u00e4 kerroksena. This spring I’ve been working on the effigy dress or the pink dress. Being really busy at work has slowed down my projects a bit. I’ve been making process little by little.<\/p>\n

My dress is inspired by the dress on Blanche Bradstone’s <\/a>(ca. 1370) funeral brass. I like the simple elegance of the dress, the fit that flares into rich folds at the hem. I’m planning on putting it to good use as an interchageable layer, both as a middle layer and a top layer. I colored the brass so you can see what I hope the overall effect will be.<\/p>\n

I’m going to make the headress too. So far I am stuck on the thing <\/em>worn under the veil. What do you think it is? How can one set fabric like that, like an opening on a helmet?<\/p>\n

Here are some making of – pictures of the dress that is still in progress. (click to enlarge) The shade of the wool changes with the light. But it is the same dress! The color is closest to reality in the picture with the cat-assistant.<\/p>\n

Mekon kaavaa on ty\u00f6stetty mahdollisimman tarkasti Herjolfsnesin D10584-mekon kaavalla. Olen pit\u00e4nyt mukana sek\u00e4 Woven into the Earthia ett\u00e4 uutta Medieval Garments Reconstructedia. Yhdess\u00e4 ne toimivat mit\u00e4 parhaimmin! Kaavaa on pit\u00e4nyt tietenkin muokata, ett\u00e4 lopputulos muistuttaisi enemm\u00e4n inspiraatiokuvaa – lis\u00e4t\u00e4 istuvuutta mutta j\u00e4tt\u00e4\u00e4 tilaa pukemiselle p\u00e4\u00e4n yli. Lis\u00e4ksi tein etukiilaan valesauman, koska se oli kankaan menekin kannalta j\u00e4rkevint\u00e4.<\/p>\n

I’ve been working on the dress pattern from both Woven into the Earth and Medieval Garments Reconstructed. They work really well together, complimenting each other. I’ve tried to follow dress D10584 as precisely as possible – but to achieve the look on the inspiration picture, I’ve had to make some alterations. I’ve fitted the dress more closely, taking in both the gores and the front and the back, but leaving still enough room that I can pull the dress on over my head. I also made a false seam in the gore on the front to save fabric.<\/p>\n

Mekko on viel\u00e4 varsin kesken, mutta p\u00e4\u00e4piirteiss\u00e4\u00e4n n\u00e4kee jo silhuetin muodostuvan. Vaikka sivusaumoja pit\u00e4\u00e4 viel\u00e4 s\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4\u00e4 ja kaula-aukkoa leikata, tykk\u00e4\u00e4n siit\u00e4 ett\u00e4 mekkoon on muodostumassa alkuper\u00e4isen ominaisuuksia. Siin\u00e4 on mukava muutta istuva yl\u00e4osa joka lantion ja vy\u00f6t\u00e4r\u00f6n mailla levenee runsaisiin jalkoihin kertyviin laskoksiin. Kangas on my\u00f6s ihanaa. Se on sen verran paksua, ett\u00e4 voin hyvin k\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00e4\u00e4 saumat sivuun vain kertaalleen pelk\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00e4 purkautumista.<\/p>\n

Lopuksi viel\u00e4 kuva kaikille niille, jotka miettiv\u00e4t sit\u00e4 ett\u00e4 onko keskiaikaisissa vaatteissa jotenkin ep\u00e4mukavaa ja rajoittavatko ne hirve\u00e4sti olemista. No ei. Aika hyvin pystyy esim. killumaan jumppapallon p\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 jos mekkoa sovitellessa\u00c2\u00a0 meinaa selk\u00e4 jumittua. (Sovitusvaiheessa kannattaa pukea alle ne vaatteet joiden kanssa mekkoa aikoo k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4. Moderneissa vaatteissa vartalo on usein niin eri muotoinen, ett\u00e4 istuvuus ei ole sama. )<\/p>\n

The dress is still very much in progress, but you can see the silhouette taking shape. I have to work on the side seams and the neckline, but I do like seeing how the dress is starting to look like the inspiration picture. The bodice has a snug fit yet it’s comfortable and the hem falls in those heavy folds and pools at my feet. I love the fabric too – it is so well felted that I can turn the seams to the side just once, without fear of the edges fraying.<\/p>\n

To conclude, a picture for thos who wonder whether medieval clothes are uncomfortable and restricting. Well, no. You can quite easily strech on top of a gym ball, for an example. (And this picture is also here to remind that when fitting an overdress it is important to do it wearing the correct underpinnings.)<\/p>\n
