Jos on vapaa-ajan ongelmia, kannattaa p\u00e4\u00e4tt\u00e4\u00e4 tehd\u00e4 rutkasti keskiaikavaatteita kahdessa ja puolessa kuukaudessa. Tavoitelistalla on saada marraskuun loppuun menness\u00e4 uusi mekko, uusi p\u00e4\u00e4llysmekko ja uusi huntu (+ leukaliina).<\/p>\n

Kaikki vapaa-aika (joka tietenkin on viime aikoina sekin ollut aivan kortilla) on mennyt ommellessa. Mutta onhan se ollut aika ihanaakin, koska ompelu nyt vaan on. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 kuvia Moyn mekon etenemisest\u00e4 joka on mennyt tosi hyvin.<\/p>\n

If you have excessive amounts of free time, it’s a good idea to plan on a new outfit in 2,5 months. My plan is to make a new dress, a surcot aka overdress and a frilled veil (+ a wimple).<\/p>\n

So lately, I’ve spent all of my free time (which I definately don’t have a lot of, boo) sewing. But then again, I love sewing so this really isn’t so bad. Here are some pictures of the making of the Moy Bog dress, which has gone delightfully well.<\/p>\n

Ny\u00f6ritys on vahvistettu sis\u00e4puolelta tukevalla pellavalla sek\u00e4 silkkisell\u00e4 nauhalla, sill\u00e4 villa on melko pehme\u00e4\u00e4. Ny\u00f6rinrei\u00e4t kannattaa ehdottomasti venytt\u00e4\u00e4 rikkomatta kankaan kudetta ja siin\u00e4 puikoista on hyv\u00e4 apu. Aukot huolittelin silkkilangalla.<\/p>\n

The lacing is lined with a strip of really sturdy linen and some silk, since the wool is fairly soft and would probably stretch without any reinforcement. The best way to make lacing holes is to stretch them open without breaking any threads in the fabric. Knitting needles are very handy in this. Then I finished the holes with silk thread.<\/p>\n

For the lace, I made a round fingerlooped braid, which I finished off with a brass tip. I wanted a long lacing like my medieval style guru Katherine Mortimer has on her tomb.<\/a> The original dress had buttons instead of a lace, so this is a deviation because of personal preference. The picture also (hopefully) shows the really nice fit of the dress, although I fitted it myself using the pins-and-mirror-method.<\/p>\n

En ehk\u00e4 henno korvata sit\u00e4 toisella siksikin, ett\u00e4 kuteessa on hirvitt\u00e4v\u00e4 sotku siin\u00e4 kohdassa jossa kutoessani kuulin siit\u00e4 laurelihommasta. \u00c3\u201ellistyksen j\u00e4ljet!<\/p>\n

The neckline is finished with a narrow tablet woven band (about half a cm), which I’m not super happy with. But I’m sure it’ll do what it is supposed to despite the annoying unevenness. It helps the neckline keep it’s shape. And actually I think I’ll never change it for another because it has this huge mistake in the weave which I made when I heard about the laurel thing when weaving. The traces of shock and awe!<\/p>\n

Moyn mekon hiha on simppeli ja hyvin monimutkainen. Lopulta kaava kuitenkin tuli melko helposti. Siin\u00e4 on hihakappaleen lis\u00e4ksi pieni etukiila ja suuri, lapaluun p\u00e4\u00e4lle ulottuva takakiila. Mallasin hihaa ensin lakanakankaalla itse ja houkuttelin yst\u00e4v\u00e4n tekem\u00e4\u00e4n lopullisen istutuksen niin, ett\u00e4 siit\u00e4 saatiin riitt\u00e4v\u00e4n kire\u00e4.<\/p>\n

The Moy bog dress has a simple and very complicated sleeve. In the end, making the pattern was relatively easy. The sleeve consists of the actual sleeve piece and a small front gore and a larger back gore that goes over the shoulder blade. I first drafted it on an old sheet and then lured a friend to do the final fit so that the sleeve will turn out nice and snug.<\/p>\n

Hihojen istutuksessa kaivattiin asiantuntevaa ja n\u00e4pp\u00e4r\u00e4sormista apua. Olen lopputulokseen aivan tosi tyytyv\u00e4inen. Mekko n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 nyt niin paljon valmiimmalta! Neuloitimme hihat paikalleen, sitten harsin ne kiinni ja ompelen sauman p\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4p\u00e4in. Juuri nyt on ompelu kesken. Mietin ett\u00e4 tekisink\u00f6 takakiilaan sellaisen pienen paikan, joka alkuper\u00e4isess\u00e4 on kiilan k\u00e4rjess\u00e4. Siit\u00e4 ei tiedet\u00e4 onko se siin\u00e4 koska mekkoa on korjattu vai onko se ollut siin\u00e4 alun perinkin.<\/p>\n

Setting the sleeves also needed assistance of a friend’s able fingers. I’m really happy with the result. The sleeves make the dress seem so much more finished! We pinned the sleeves into place, I basted them put and now I’m sewing them in place, sewing them from the outside. I wonder if I should put a little patch onto the tip of the back gore like on the original. It’s not known if the patch was a repair or if it was put there when the dress was made. That point takes a lot of stress, so it may be necessary.<\/p>\n

P\u00e4\u00e4llysmekkoon hankin kankaat Medeltidsmodelta. Selasin kangasn\u00e4ytteit\u00e4 ajatellen, mik\u00e4 keskiajalla olisi ollut kalleinta. Lopputulos on ylellisen v\u00e4rinen, paksu ja raskas tiiviisti huovutettu villa. Valkoinen on mekon yksityiskohtiin. P\u00e4\u00e4llysmekko on leikattu ja on sit\u00e4 hieman ommeltukin. Paksun kankaan ompelu ottaa sormien p\u00e4\u00e4lle!<\/p>\n

I got the fabric for the overdress from Medeltidsmode. I chose it thinking of what would have been the most expensive option: a heavy, fulled wool in a luxurious shade. The white is for the details. The surcot is now cut and waiting to be sewn. That heavy wool will be hard on the fingers!<\/p>\n

Loppukevennyksen\u00e4 kuva siit\u00e4, miten sovituksessa ei pit\u00e4isi menetell\u00e4. Itse aina hoen sovitettavilleni ”seiso suorassa, \u00e4l\u00e4 liiku” (koska muuten voi kaikki menn\u00e4 vinksalleen). Ja heheheee, itse maistelin viini\u00e4! Onneksi Sahra on niin taitava ettei se haitannut. Kompensaationa sovitin yhden alusmekon ja p\u00e4\u00e4llysmekon.<\/p>\n

Ending on a humorous note: how not to behave when being fitted. I always tell the people I fit ”don’t fidget, stand up straight” (because fidgeting leads to an odd fit) and hee hee, here I go drinking wine while being fitted! Lucky for me, Sahra is so talented that despite my unruly behaviour the sleeves turned out great. To compensate I fitted her an underdress and an overdress.<\/p>\n
