Rakastan uusien asioiden oppimista. Saan siit\u00e4 aivan k\u00e4sitt\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00f6m\u00e4sti virtaa. Sain juuri valmiiksi projektin, jossa yhdistyi koko liuta uusia taitoja. Niit\u00e4 on opeteltu pitkin viime vuotta. T\u00e4m\u00e4n harrastuksen yksi mahtavuus on se,\u00c2\u00a0 ett\u00e4 uutta on aina opittavana.<\/p>\n

Tein 1300-luvun muodin mukaiset tekoletit. Niiden esikuva on Lontoosta l\u00f6ydetty hiuslaite. Olen haaveillut sellaisen tekemisest\u00e4 jo kauan, mutta hannaillut l\u00e4hinn\u00e4 lautanauhan tekemist\u00e4. Samanlaisia tekolettej\u00e4 olen k\u00e4ytt\u00e4nyt jo pitk\u00e4\u00e4n (kuten kuvista n\u00e4kyy), mutta niiss\u00e4 ei ole lautanauhaa vaan villasta tehty nauha.<\/p>\n

T\u00e4m\u00e4 oli sellainen luksusprojekti ja ns. hidasta el\u00e4v\u00f6itt\u00e4mist\u00e4 (laadukkaita juttuja hyvist\u00e4 materiaaleista aikaa s\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00e4).\u00c2\u00a0 Joku voi nimitt\u00e4in kysy\u00e4, miksi nysv\u00e4t\u00e4 ymp\u00e4ri vuotta pikkujuttua, joka ei edes tule juuri n\u00e4kym\u00e4\u00e4n p\u00e4\u00e4hineen alta. Vastaus lienee ett\u00e4 siksi kun pystyy ja haluaa. Sen j\u00e4lkeen kun sain tarvittavan perussetin kokoon,\u00c2\u00a0 projekteissa ei ole ollut kyse niink\u00e4\u00e4n uuden tavaran saamisesta vaan oppimisesta. Tekemisest\u00e4 ja tutkimisesta on tullut se suurin nautinto. Vaikka kielt\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00e4 valmiiksi saamisessakin on oma ilonsa.<\/p>\n

T\u00e4ss\u00e4 projektissa on erityist\u00e4 ja kivaa my\u00f6s se, ett\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4sin ty\u00f6st\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n materiaaleja alusta asti.<\/p>\n

Letit on tehty pellavasta, jonka k\u00e4sittely\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4sin harjoittelemaan<\/a> viime kes\u00e4n\u00e4 Seurasaaressa. Langat v\u00e4rj\u00e4ttiin viime kes\u00e4n\u00e4, kun kokeilin ensimm\u00e4ist\u00e4 kertaa kasviv\u00e4rj\u00e4\u00e4mist\u00e4<\/a>. Lautanauhan tekemisen sain opeteltua<\/a> kunnolla viime kev\u00e4\u00e4n\u00e4. T\u00e4m\u00e4 lautanauha oli toinen lautanauhaprojektini ja siin\u00e4 tein ensimm\u00e4isen kerran itse ohjeen arkeologisen l\u00f6yd\u00f6n pohjalta.<\/p>\n

Uuden oppiminen on tietenkin mahdollista vain, koska on ihmisi\u00e4 jotka ovat valmiita jakamaan osaamistaan. I love learning new things. It’s one of the things that makes me tick. I just finished my latest project which allowed me to combine several new skills that I’ve picked up over the past year. One of the best things about this hobby is that there is always more to learn.<\/p>\n

This time I’ve made a 14th century hairpiece. It’s based on a hairpiece found from London. I’ve wanted to make this kind of hairpiece properly for years now, but I’ve hesitated because I haven’t felt up to doing the tabletweaving. I’ve been wearing the same kind of cornettes for years (as you can see in the pics), but they’ve never had a tablet woven band, but a simpler band made out of wool.<\/p>\n

This was a luxurious project and a prime example of so called slow re-enactment (making quality goods with good materials and taking plenty of time). Someone may ask, why would anyone spend so much time on a little piece that can hardly be seen from under the headdress. The answer may be along the lines of because I’m able to and want to. After I’d assembled my basic kit, making new things has ceased being so much about acquiring new things. It’s more about the process than the finished product. The making and the learning has become the greatest thrill, although finishing things is still thrilling.<\/p>\n

What also makes this project special is that I’ve had a chance to work on many of the materials: dye the yarn ans process the flax.<\/p>\n

The braids are made of flax that I processed last summer<\/a> in Seurasaari. The yarn is from my first go at natural dyeing<\/a> at last summer. Tablet weaving is also a new skill, which I taught myself<\/a> last spring. This was the first time I made a weaving pattern myself and from a archaeological object.<\/p>\n

What makes learning new things possible are the wonderful people who want to share their knowledge. This is why it’s time for an Oscars style thank you – speech: Thank you Piia for guiding me through the process of making flax, Liisa for giving my first try at natural dyeing, Mary for helping me with some really tricky english vocabulary and Sahra for\u00c2\u00a0 being my helpdesk and answering my tablet-weaving questions.<\/p>\n
