Aikaisemmista englanninnoksista on j\u00e4tetty pois osia tai enimm\u00e4kseen keskitytty resepteihin.\u00c2\u00a0 Reseptit ovat olleet\u00c2\u00a0t\u00e4m\u00e4n teoksen tunnetuin ja varmasti el\u00e4v\u00f6itt\u00e4jien ahkerimmin k\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4 osa. Uudessa k\u00e4\u00e4nn\u00f6ksess\u00e4 korostuu se, ett\u00e4 reseptit ovat vain osa kokonaisuutta.<\/p>\n

El\u00e4v\u00f6itt\u00e4j\u00e4lle teos on verraton tietol\u00e4hde ja kiehtovan intiimi kurkistusvinkkeli 1300-luvun pariisilaisen porvariston arvomaailmaan ja huushollaamisen detaljeihin. Kirjasta on luettavissa ruoanlaitto-ohjeiden lis\u00e4ksi vinkkej\u00e4 k\u00e4rp\u00e4sten pyydyst\u00e4misest\u00e4, hy\u00f6nteisvahinkojen minimoinnista vaates\u00e4ilytyksess\u00e4, haukan kasvatuksesta, hevosten ja palvelijoiden valinnasta sek\u00e4 ennen kaikkea siit\u00e4, millainen on hyv\u00e4 vaimo.<\/p>\n

K\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00e4j\u00e4t ovat tehneet tietoisen valinnan nostamalla vaimon teoksen otsikkoon.\u00c2\u00a0Johdannossa kyseenalaistetaan kaksi keskeist\u00e4 ja totuttua k\u00e4sityst\u00e4 t\u00e4st\u00e4 k\u00e4sikirjoituksesta:\u00c2\u00a0 tekstin kirjoittaja ei ole kertoja, vaan kertoja on fiktiivinen hahmo ja teos rinnastuu siten samanaikaisiin vastaaviin hyv\u00e4n el\u00e4m\u00e4n oppaisiin. Aiemmin on tulkittu, ett\u00e4 kyseess\u00e4 on porvarismiehen itse vaimolleen kirjoittama opaskirja.<\/p>\n

My\u00f6s tekstin kertojan mukavuus on kyseenalaistettu – usein t\u00e4h\u00e4n tekstiin viitataan\u00c2\u00a0korostaen, \u00c2\u00a0miten kiltti\u00e4 ik\u00e4\u00e4ntyv\u00e4lt\u00e4 porvarismiehelt\u00e4 on tehd\u00e4 opas nuorelle vaimolleen. (Toisaalta olen aina ihmetellyt t\u00e4t\u00e4, mit\u00e4 v\u00e4li\u00e4 on sill\u00e4, miten mukava mies on tai ei.)<\/p>\n

Kertojan mukavuus kyseenalaistuukin\u00c2\u00a0 modernin lukijan mieless\u00e4. Vaimolta odotetaan ehdotonta kuuliaisuutta, n\u00f6yryytt\u00e4 ja alistumista. Asia korostetaan puuduttavan pitkiss\u00e4 opettavaisissa tarinoissa hyvien vaimojen alistumisesta: hyv\u00e4 vaimo vie miehelle puhtaat lakanat rakastajattaren kotiin ja\u00c2\u00a0antaa miehen tapattaa yhteiset lapset vailla vastalausetta.\u00c2\u00a0 Vaimo pomppii kun mies k\u00e4skee, eik\u00e4 kysy miksi. Miehell\u00e4 on oikeus antaa kupata koetteleva ja kyseenalaistava nuori vaimo hengilt\u00e4.<\/p>\n

Kertoja edellytt\u00e4\u00e4 hyv\u00e4lt\u00e4 vaimolta sellaista \u00c2\u00a0ehdotonta alistumista, ettei kenties ole mukavan ja edistyksellisen maineensa veroinen, mutta aikalaisenaan tuskin ansaitsee aivan kirjoittajien johdannossa tarjoilemaa t\u00e4yslaidallista. Minusta menneisyytt\u00e4 tulee tarkastella jonkinlaisin kulttuurirelativistisin kakkuloin. Tavallaan keskustelu kertojan ”mukavuudesta” onkin aavistuksen absurdi.<\/p>\n

Lukukokemuksena kirja on antoisa, mutta toisaalta raskas. Alkuper\u00e4isteos muuttuu loppuaan kohti viimeistelem\u00e4tt\u00f6m\u00e4mm\u00e4ksi ja sekavaksi. Tarinat n\u00f6yrist\u00e4 vaimoista alkavat puuduttaa (ja my\u00f6nn\u00e4n, ketuttaa). Lauseet venyv\u00e4t pahimmillaan puolen sivun mittaisiksi. K\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00e4j\u00e4t tekev\u00e4t ansiokasta ty\u00f6t\u00e4 j\u00e4sentelyss\u00e4 ja lukijan tukemisessa.<\/p>\n

Reseptej\u00e4 on mukana t\u00e4ydet 380, mik\u00e4 on varsinainen aarreaitta. Ruoanlaitosta kiinnostuneille suosittelen t\u00e4m\u00e4n kirjan rinnalle oheisteokseksi kuitenkin vaikka esim. Living and dining in Medieval Paris<\/em>-kirjaa.<\/p>\n

Neulakon lukijoita kiinnostanee, mit\u00e4 kirja kertoo vaatteista ja pukeutumisesta. Lukija oppii, ett\u00e4 hyv\u00e4 vaimo pukeutuu huolellisesti, eik\u00e4 h\u00e4p\u00e4ise miest\u00e4\u00e4n homssuisella ulkoasulla, kuten j\u00e4tt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 aluspaitamekkoaan n\u00e4kyviin mekon alta kaula-aukosta. Jos haluaa v\u00e4ltt\u00e4\u00e4 koiden ja sy\u00f6p\u00e4l\u00e4isten tuhot, vaatteita kannattaa tuulettaa (t\u00e4h\u00e4n on runsaasti\u00c2\u00a0muita ohjeita).<\/p>\n

Tarinoissa korostuu vaatteiden merkitys aseman merkkin\u00e4. Happy international womens’ day! Here at Neulakko we celebrate it by getting to know what was expected of a good wife in the 14th century.<\/p>\n

Last year saw the publication of the first full english translation of the Menagier de Paris, a manuscript famous for its delicious recipes. The full translation highlights the fact that the recipes are not the only thing this manuscript should be known for.<\/p>\n

The book is a wonderful source for the re-enactor. It offers a\u00c2\u00a0detailed and intimate\u00c2\u00a0look into the household, values and daily life of the parisian 14th century bourgoisie. As well as recipes, the book offers thorough how-to’s on hawking, choosing horses and servants, cleaning, pest control and first and foremost: how to be a good wife.<\/p>\n

The translators have made a conscious choice with a title referring to the wife and not ”the Menagier” aka the narrator. In the introduction they question two conceptions about the manuscript. They suggest that the narrator and writer are not the same person. The husband-narrator\u00c2\u00a0is seen as a fictive person and the\u00c2\u00a0book is likened to contemporary guides on how to live a good life.<\/p>\n

The\u00c2\u00a0translators also question the reputation of the husband-narrator as a nice\u00c2\u00a0man.\u00c2\u00a0When referring to this manuscript, it is\u00c2\u00a0often mentioned how nice it is of the elderly husband to have written such a guide to his young wife.<\/p>\n

In the eyes of the modern reader the narrator does not appear very nice at all.\u00c2\u00a0What is expected of the good wife is absolute\u00c2\u00a0submission and obedience. This fact is stressed in endless stories of wives and husbands: a good wife brings his husband\u00c2\u00a0clean sheets to sleep in in the house of his mistress and does not object when the husband decides to kill their children. A husband has a right to have a disobedient wife bled to\u00c2\u00a0death.<\/p>\n

The narrator expects such obedience from his wife that he may well not be worth his nice reputation, however I also think he isn’t quite as ’bad’ as the translators deem in their (interesting and thought-provoking) introduction. I believe in a pinch of cultural relativism when looking at the past\u00c2\u00a0 – on medieval terms the Menagier is only repeating the values of contemporary society. All in all I’ve always found the discussion on how ’nice’ he is a little bit absurd.<\/p>\n

Reading the book is very rewarding although the experience gets quite heavy and hard at times.\u00c2\u00a0 As the book nears it’s end the writing becomes less and less finished and harder to follow. At some points, the endless stories of obedient wives start to become a bit of a bore (and I admit getting a bit pissed off at times too). Sometimes the sentences are over half a page long.\u00c2\u00a0 Here the translators do a great job at guiding the reader through the difficult bits and bringing some structure to the reading experience.<\/p>\n

There are a full 380 recipes, which are an excellent source. I would however suggest that a reader intrested in medieval cookery would read this book with a companion, like Living and Dining in Medieval Paris.<\/p>\n

The readers of Neulakko are probably interested in what the book has to say on clothing and textiles. Among other things, we learn that the good wife dresses carefully and neatly, not letting her undershirt\/dress show from under her clothes and thus keeps the good reputation of his husband.\u00c2\u00a0 In order to avoid damage to clothes by moths and other pesky creatures, clothes have to be aired often (and various other things can be done as well).<\/p>\n

The stories in the book emphasize the meaning of clothes as markers of reputation and status. In a central story, poor Griselda, abandoned by her rich and powerful husband, returns to the home of her father, nearly naked and returns to wearing her old clothes of a poor status. This is a horrifying shock to her rich friends, who weep at this awful humiliation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
