Brysseliss\u00e4 ja Bryggess\u00e4 oli mainiota. Varsinkin Brygge oli keskiaikaharrastajalle aivan uskomattoman mahtava\u00c2\u00a0 paikka. Vanha kaupunki oli ehe\u00e4 ja n\u00e4ytt\u00e4v\u00e4 keskiaikainen kaupunkikokonaisuus ja\u00c2\u00a0 kanavien halkomana lis\u00e4ksi tietenkin todella kaunis (my\u00f6s hirve\u00e4ss\u00e4 kylm\u00e4ss\u00e4 ja sateisessa s\u00e4\u00e4ss\u00e4). Bryssel varsinaisesti ole kauneudestaan tunnettu, mutta siell\u00e4kin on paljon n\u00e4ht\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4.<\/p>\n

Ennen matkaa sain hyvi\u00e4 vinkkej\u00e4 siit\u00e4, mit\u00e4 kannattaa k\u00e4yd\u00e4 katsastamassa. Niiden avulla tein varsinaisen supermuseokierroksen: Brysseliss\u00e4 k\u00e4vin kansallisessa historiallisessa museossa eli Koninklijke Musea voor Kunst en Geschiedenis:ss\u00e4<\/a>, Bryggess\u00e4 k\u00e4vin Arkeologisessa museossa,<\/a> Gruuthusissa<\/a>, beguiiniluostarissa\u00c2\u00a0 ja kaupungintalolla<\/a> sek\u00e4 kurkkimassa kirkkoihin. Lis\u00e4ksi varasin aikaa kaupungilla kiertelemiseen. Melkein jokainen talo oli ihastuttava ja kiinnostava. Bryggess\u00e4 historiaa on joka nurkan takana, v\u00e4lill\u00e4 aika yll\u00e4tt\u00e4viss\u00e4kin paikoissa.<\/p>\n

Bryggess\u00e4 on my\u00f6s liuta museoita, joissa on n\u00e4ht\u00e4vill\u00e4 ”flaamilaisia primitiivej\u00e4”, eli taideteoksia maalareilta kuten van Eyck ja Memling. P\u00e4\u00e4tin t\u00e4ll\u00e4 kertaa kuitenkin keskitty\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n esineist\u00f6\u00f6n ja j\u00e4tt\u00e4\u00e4 maalaustaiteen toiseen kertaan. Museokaupasta otin seuraavaan kertaa varten hyv\u00e4n kirjasen n\u00e4iden taiteilijoiden tuotannosta. Samalla reissulla tarttui mukaan my\u00f6s Heilig en Profaan <\/a>, joka on osoittautunut mainioksi ostokseksi. 1000 keskiaikaista tinamerkki\u00e4, sek\u00e4 uskonnollisia ett\u00e4 maallisia (kuten nimest\u00e4 kuulee) sek\u00e4 erinomaisia artikkeleita n\u00e4ist\u00e4. Kirja on hollanniksi paria teksti\u00e4 lukuunottamatta, mutta kyll\u00e4 siit\u00e4 kovap\u00e4isen\u00e4 ottaa selv\u00e4n. Kirjasarjan kakkososa pit\u00e4\u00e4 kyll\u00e4 joskus ostaa, ehdottomasti.<\/p>\n

Museoissa tulee otettua kovasti kuvia ihan omaksi ilokseen ja tavallaan muistiinpanoiksi. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 reissulta jotain kohokohtia. Enemm\u00e4nkin kuvia on, mutta ihan viel\u00e4 en ole varma laitanko niit\u00e4 Neulakon galleriaan, koska olen v\u00e4h\u00e4n kyps\u00e4n\u00e4 tuohon galleriasovellukseen ja mietin sen vaihtamista kokonaan uuteen. (Gruuthusista ei kuvia, sill\u00e4 siell\u00e4 oli kuvaaminen kielletty.)<\/p>\n

I had a blast in Belgium, mostly thanks to the great tips I got on what to see. I visited both Brussels and Bruges. Especially the latter is a great place to visit for any medieval enthusiast. The whole town is lovely, it was great to just walk around, go ooh and aah next to almost every other building in the Old town. Even the awful weather didn’t dull the charm of the canals, the buildings and the winding streets. The thing about Bruges is that there’s history lurking everywhere.<\/p>\n

I did a supertour of the museums. In Brussels I went to the National History Museum, which is very nice, although the textiles room with the english embroidery I had expected to see was unfortunately closed (for repairs?). They had some very nice aquamaniles, candle holders, ivory mirror casings, a beautiful crown etc.<\/p>\n

In Bruges I made a decision to save the works of the flemish primitives like Memling and van Eyck for another visit and concentrate on objects and buildings instead of works of art. I went to the Old town hall with 1370s sculpted consoles (replacements on the outside walls, some of the originals on display inside) With a very amusingly pompous neo-gothic interior, with some actual gothic bits too. I also visited the Archaeological museum; I think I enjoyed the shoe display the most – they had a very interesting leather patten and possibly the prettiest medieval shoe I’ve ever seen on display (see below). And good ceramics as well! it would have been nice would there have been more info on the objects available (dating, where they had been found etc), but I did appreciate the way the display had been built up, I think especially child visitors would appreciate it.<\/p>\n

Then I went to the Gruuthuusemuseum, once a dwelling of a well-to-do 15th century family, the building itself is worth seeing. The private chapelroom in the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk accessible by a small bridge from the house is quite likely the height of medieval luxury. Some nice things on display too, i.e. opus anglicanum liturgical embroidery and carved devotional tablets made out of ivoryas well as nice everyday items like tripods and other cooking related items.<\/p>\n

The Museum shop had the Heilig en profaan-books on pewter badges, I got the first one, which was a very good purchase. The book covers 1000 medieval pewter badges (both religious and secular, as the name says) and has some very insightful articles on them as well. It’s mostly in dutch with some english text, but with a bit of effort I can make out what the dutch text says too.<\/p>\n

I also saw some of the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk, of which I got a small peek, on sunday most of the churches were in use and not accessible to tourists. On Sunday I also visited the beautiful Bequinage.<\/p>\n

I took quite a bit of pictures and here are some of the highlights. I don’t know when or whether I’ll post most of them into the gallery – I’m not very satisfied with the gallery programme I’m running now and am looking for a new, better one. So perhaps I’ll decide what to do with the gallery first and then upload all the pictures. (No pictures from Gruuthus, since pics weren’t allowed)<\/p>\n

Kahvilan naistenhuoneesta tein yll\u00e4tt\u00e4v\u00e4n l\u00f6yd\u00f6n: Siell\u00e4 oli takanreunus, jota koristaneessa veistoksessa oli nainen O:n muotoisessa ryppyhunnussa. En juksaa! Amid all the museumhopping, went for a coffee at a cafe close to the Belfry, used the ladies room and in there I discovered a mantelpiece, with sculptures – one of which appeared to be a woman in an O-shaped frilled headdress.\u00c2\u00a0 I kid thee not! in Bruges, there’s history everywhere!<\/p>\n
