L\u00f6ysin Middelaldercentret Gerry Embletonin The Medieval Soldierin l\u00e4hdeluettelosta joskus 1990-luvun lopulla. Luin pient\u00e4 pr\u00e4ntti\u00e4 n\u00e4hd\u00e4kseni miss\u00e4 mielikuvitusta kutkuttavat kuvat on otettu. Ja siin\u00e4 se oli. Middelaldercentret. Tanskassa oli el\u00e4v\u00e4 keskiaikainen kaupunki. Sinne!<\/p>\n

Joten 2000-luvun alkupuolella teimme moottoripy\u00f6r\u00e4matkan Tanskaan. Soitettuani ensin kolikkopuhelimella (nuoriso, t\u00e4llaista oli ennen kunnollista internetti\u00e4) Tanskan matkailuneuvontaan selvitt\u00e4\u00e4kseni miten sinne oikein p\u00e4\u00e4see, viimein parkkeerasimme py\u00f6r\u00e4n Nyk\u00c3\u00b8bing Falsterissa ja k\u00e4velin ensimm\u00e4ist\u00e4 kertaa Sundk\u00c3\u00b8bingin porteista.<\/p>\n

Siell\u00e4 oli ihanaa! Se oli mit\u00e4 odotin ja enemm\u00e4n.<\/p>\n

Otin biljooona valokuvaa<\/a>, koskettelin ja tutkiskelin kaikkea, juttelin kaupungin asukkaiden kanssa ja lopuksi ostin museokaupasta keraamisen kannun joka oli naurettavan iso kotiin kuljetettavaksi moottoripy\u00f6r\u00e4n laukussa.  <\/p>\n

Olen k\u00e4ynyt Middelaldercentret\u00c3\u00adss\u00e4 kahdesti turistina. Se on mainio kohde – vaikka ei olisikaan ihan keskiaikaan hurahtanut. Se on opettavainen -mutta hauskalla ja el\u00e4myksekk\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 tavalla. K\u00f6piksest\u00e4 on n\u00e4pp\u00e4r\u00e4 yhteys junalla ja bussilla\/taksilla. <\/p>\n

Turistina satuin kuulemaan, ett\u00e4 joskus kaupungissa asuu joskus my\u00f6s ulkomaisia el\u00e4v\u00f6itt\u00e4ji\u00e4. Sinne! Seuraava tavoite oli saavuttaa semmoinen taso, ett\u00e4 siit\u00e4 tulisi mahdollista. <\/p>\n

Se vaati paljon aikaa, henkil\u00f6kohtaista kehityst\u00e4 ja muutamia eritt\u00e4in onnekkaita k\u00e4\u00e4nteit\u00e4. Middelaldercentret asettaa melko tiukat vaatimukset sen vapaaehtoisilleen. Ja niin sen kuuluukin menn\u00e4, sill\u00e4 el\u00e4v\u00f6itt\u00e4j\u00e4t eli Sundkobingin kaupunkilaiset ovat aivan k\u00e4vij\u00e4kokemuksen ydint\u00e4. Kaupunki on el\u00e4v\u00e4 – se on asuttu ja ihmisille voi jutella. T\u00e4m\u00e4 erottaa sen monista vastaavista kohteista ja museoista. <\/p>\n

Heittokoneet olivat koko keskuksen alku. \/ The trebuchets was where it began.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Kuitenkin vuonna 2015 k\u00e4velin porteista Sundk\u00c3\u00b8bingiin keskiaikavaatteissa. Se oli todella ihanaa! Asuimme Rikun ja Mervin (joka olis siell\u00e4 meist\u00e4 ensimm\u00e4isen\u00e4 edellisen\u00e4 vuonna). T\u00e4n\u00e4 vuonna p\u00e4\u00e4simme viikoksi suuremmassa ryhm\u00e4ss\u00e4, l\u00e4hes koko Iloisen Joutsenen porukalla. N\u00e4m\u00e4 ovat olleet ihania aikoja, josta olen ikuisesti kiitollinen. <\/p>\n

Ryhm\u00e4n\u00e4 tavoitteemme el\u00e4v\u00f6ityksess\u00e4 on el\u00e4\u00e4 keskiaikaisen k\u00e4sity\u00f6l\u00e4isen normaalia kaupunkilaisarkea. Joten meille,Middelaldercentret on paras mahdollinen ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6 tehd\u00e4 juuri st\u00e4 mihin pyrimme. Asumme kaupungissa, ty\u00f6skentelemme ty\u00f6pajoissa ja saamme k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6mme ty\u00f6kaluja ja tiloja joita emme voisi edes kuvitella rakentaavamme tai ottavamme mukaan leirille tai markkinoille. <\/p>\n

On todella vaikeaa kuvailla sit\u00e4, millaista siell\u00e4 oleminen ja asuminen oikeasti on. Veirailujen aikana kehit\u00e4n mieless\u00e4ni listan miljooonasta aiheesta joista kirjoitan t\u00e4nne heti kotiin tultuani. Mutta sitten se on kaikki jotenkin liikaa. Liikaa yhteen kirjoitukseen, liikaa kuvattavaksi. Mutta t\u00e4ll\u00e4 kertaa lopetan listaamalla edes lempiasiani. <\/p>\n

Kiireinen ja hiljainen kaupunki<\/strong><\/h4>\n

P\u00e4iv\u00e4n aikana kaupunki on t\u00e4ynn\u00e4 el\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4 – ty\u00f6pajoissa tehd\u00e4\u00e4n hommia, kaduilla kulkee sek\u00e4 vierailijoita ett\u00e4 el\u00e4v\u00f6itt\u00e4ji\u00e4. Kaikkialla tapahtuu, jokaisessa talossa on omanlaista puuhaa ja tietty tunnelma. Jos pit\u00e4isi valita suosikki, vaikeaksi menisi.  <\/p>\n

Iltaisin portit suljetaan ja kaupunki hiljenee. On aika hieman huilata, jutustella kesken\u00e4\u00e4n ja sy\u00f6d\u00e4 yhdess\u00e4 irrallisen oloisessa paikassa, maailmassa jota valaisee vain el\u00e4v\u00e4 tuli. Tanskalaisittain keskiaikaista hygge\u00e4 eli hykkeily\u00e4. <\/p>\n

Ihmiset<\/h4>\n

Samanhenkisten ihmisten kohtaaminen on aina mukavaa, mutta pid\u00e4n erityisesti siit\u00e4 miten Middelaldercentret kokoaa yhteen eri-ik\u00e4isi\u00e4 ihmisi\u00e4 erilaisista taustoista (ja maista!). Ja miten taitavaa v\u00e4ke\u00e4 onkaan! Ihailen henkil\u00f6kunta siit\u00e4 miten tehokkaasti kaikkea py\u00f6ritet\u00e4\u00e4n ja vapaahetoisissa ihailen sit\u00e4 miten professionaali voi olla ilman ett\u00e4 on varsinaisesti ammatilainen.  <\/p>\n

El\u00e4imet<\/h4>\n

El\u00e4imet ovat arkinen asia joka monesti puuttuu keskiajan el\u00e4v\u00f6ityksest\u00e4. Mutta ei t\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4! Ja se tuo paljon lis\u00e4\u00e4. H\u00e4tistell\u00e4\u00e4n hanhia,  ruokitaan kanoja ja sikoja, ihastellaan kissoja ja kun ritarit ratsastavat l\u00e4pi kaupungin p\u00e4ivitt\u00e4isten turnajaisten j\u00e4lkeen, ei voi muuta kuin ihailla hevosten kokoa, kauneutta ja voimaa.  <\/p>\n

Ty\u00f6t\u00e4 ty\u00f6t\u00e4 ty\u00f6t\u00e4 <\/h4>\n

Monta kertaa el\u00e4v\u00f6itystilanteissa on liikaa semmoista istuskelua, jossa ollaan keskiaikaisen n\u00e4k\u00f6isi\u00e4. Se on vaikeaa jos on luonteeltaan puuhakas. Mutta Middelaldercentretiss\u00e4 ei ole tekemisest\u00e4 pulaa. Tykk\u00e4\u00e4n kovasti (kukaan ei yll\u00e4ty) ommella r\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4lill\u00e4, mutta my\u00f6s panimotalon valtavalla ja v\u00e4h\u00e4n pelottavalla uunilla leipominen on ihan mahtavaa. Parasta on se asenne mik\u00e4 keskuksen vakkareilla on: kaikkea saa tehd\u00e4, alkuopastuksella tietenkin. ”T\u00e4ss\u00e4 ty\u00f6kalut, anna menn\u00e4!” Ja onhan se kivempi hykkeill\u00e4 iltaisin kun takana on ty\u00f6nt\u00e4yteinen p\u00e4iv\u00e4. <\/p>\n

I first discovered Middelaldercentret in the footnotes of Gerry Embleton’s The Medieval Soldier some time in the late 1990’s. I was reading the small print to see where the lovely pictures were taken – and there it was. Middelaldercentret. There was a medieval town in Denmark. I had to see it.<\/p>\n

So in the early 2000’s we took a motorcycle trip to Denmark. And after telephoning (kids, this what it was like before the internet was what it now is) the Danish tourist information agency from a pay phone to find out how to get there, we eventually parked our motorcycle in Nyk\u00c3\u00b8bing Falster and I got to walk in through the gates into Sundk\u00c3\u00b8bing for the first time.<\/p>\n

Loved it. It was a what I expected and more.<\/p>\n

I took a gazillion pictures<\/a>, touched, felt, talked to the interpreters and bought a ceramic jug which was ridiculously large to take home on the motorcycle.<\/p>\n

I’ve visited Middelaldercentret twice as a tourist. It’s a great attraction – even if you are less interested in the middle ages or history than I am. It’s educational, exceptional and fun. And travelling to the centre by train + bus\/taxi from Copenhagen is quite easy.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

During my touristy visits I heard that sometimes they had even foreign re-enactors as volunteers. And that set my second goal. I had to reach a level to be able to get to live there.<\/p>\n

Now this took a lot of time, personal development – and not to mention some very fortunate turns of events. The centre sets rather high demands on it’s volunteers. And that’s only natural, since the interpreters that live as citizens in Sundkobing are at the very core of the visitor experience at the centre. The town is alive – it is inhabited and you can talk to the people – which is something that sets it apart from many open air museums and similar places.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, in 2015 I walked through the gates of Sundk\u00c3\u00b8bing in my medieval clothes to live in one of the houses with Riku and Mervi (who had been the first to go in 2014). It was super! This year got to go there for a week with a larger group, with almost everyone from Merry Swan. These have been wonderful times for which I am forever grateful.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Our goal in living history is to re-enact the regular everyday life of medieval craftsmen. So for us, the centre is the best possible surroundings to do what we aspire to. We live in town, work in workshops and have access to tools and spaces we could never even imagine to build or take along when camping by a battle re-enactment.<\/p>\n

It’s all very challenging to describe it as an experience. During my stays I always create a list of a million subjects I intend to write about as soon as I get home, but once home it always seems like too much to put into one blog post. But this time perhaps describing some of my favourite things can give you an idea of what it is like.<\/p>\n

The busy town and the quiet evenings<\/h4>\n

During the day the town is full of life – the workshops and the streets are busy with both interpreters and tourists. Things happen everywhere. Each building has it’s own characteristics and things to do in it. It’s hard to try and pick a favourite among the houses. <\/p>\n

In the evenings the gates close and the town quiets down. This is a time for a little moment of chilling, chatting and having dinner with your friends in a world lit only by fire. A time for some medieval hygge, as the danes say.

The people<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meeting people with similar interests is always a thrill. I love the way the centre brings together some seriously cool and interesting people of different ages and backgrounds. And all the things that people know how to do! I admire the staff for how they run the place and the volunteers for showing that you can portray with a high level of professionalism even if you are technically not a professional, but a volunteer.    <\/p>\n

The animals<\/strong><\/p>\n

Animals are an everyday thing that is often missing in medieval living history. But not here. And it certainly adds to all of it. You shoo the geese, feed the pigs and chickens, adore the cats and admire the sheer size and might of the horses as the knights sometimes ride though town after the daily tournaments.  <\/p>\n

The work work work<\/h4>\n

An issue I have with a lot of medieval settings is that there can be a lot of just sitting around and looking medieval. I’m not the sitting around type. I need things to do and that is what the centre offers: all sorts of interesting work. Besides the obvious  working at the Tailor, getting to bake and cook with the huge oven at the Brewers house is a favourite of mine. I really appreciate the attitude where everyone is free to try and work on almost anything (with some guidance of course): ”Here are the tools, you go ahead”. And not to mention the hygge in the evenings is so much better after a busy day. <\/p>\n
