I bought three new books to complement my collection in my already bursting bookcase. I got two books by Janne Harjula: Sheaths, Scabbards and Grip Coverings – The Use of Leather For Portable Personal Objects in the Late 14th-16th Century Turku (2005) and Before the Heels – Footwear and Shoemaking in Turku in the Middle Ages and at the Beginning of the Early Modern Period (2008). The third book is a collection of articles called Kaupunkia pintaa syvemmaltä, which provides archaeological insight into the history of Turku.

The neatest thing about all these books is that they are all on finnish artefacts.

So far, I’ve made it about halfway through the articles in Kaupunkia pintaa syvemmältä. I’ve enjoyed it immensely. Not only has it provided many new brain-tickling details on the process of artefacts becoming arcaheological objects, urban archaeology and how timber houses were built in Turku, but also many worthwhile philosophical ponderings on archaeology as a science. A thought which has stuck is that instead of frustration at the uncertainties and the many possible interpretations, we should learn to enjoy the richness and variety of interepretation (Yep, I’m sure no-one understood what I meant by that…).

I’m planning to use the books by Harjula to nurture my growing interest in leatherworking. (But why is leather so €%&/:n difficult to handle?) And by coincidence Glossa presents a talk on medieval footwear and fashion byt the same Janne Harjula on the 21st of April. I’m attending!

I also did quite a bit of sewing so most likely my next post will have progress pics of my new surcoat.

Pääsiäinen toi tullessaan visiitin Turkuun ja sen myötä uusia kirjoja.
