T\u00e4n\u00e4\u00e4n Neulakko on k\u00e4sity\u00f6blogin sijaan pikemminkin muotiblogi. Sen sijaan ett\u00e4 n\u00e4ytt\u00e4isin mit\u00e4 olen tehnyt, kerron mit\u00e4 olen ostanut.<\/p>\n

T\u00e4n\u00e4\u00e4n tuli Battle-Merchantista<\/a> paketti, jossa oli uudet keng\u00e4t ja ennen kaikkea uusi lyhty. Paketti saapui juuri ajallaan, kotiin toimitettuna. Ensitilaus uudesta putiikista on aina v\u00e4h\u00e4n j\u00e4nn\u00e4: tuleeko paketti postiin (esim. Handelsgillet), l\u00e4hikauppaan (esim. Naturtuche) vai kotiovelle (esim. Matuls ja Battle-Merchant)?<\/p>\n

Keng\u00e4t ovat perusmalliset edest\u00e4 ny\u00f6ritett\u00e4v\u00e4t k\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00f6keng\u00e4t. Noin viidell\u00e4kympin hinta on mielest\u00e4ni edullinen, varsinkin kun kaikki saumat ovat sellaiset mit\u00e4 pit\u00e4\u00e4kin. Koko on my\u00f6s sopiva ja lesti on jopa yll\u00e4tt\u00e4v\u00e4n leve\u00e4. Saattaa olla, ett\u00e4 tuunailen niit\u00e4 jossain vaiheessa hieman. Taidan napata matalammaksi ainakin tuon kantap\u00e4\u00e4n l\u00e4rpyk\u00e4n. Sellaista en nimitt\u00e4in muista n\u00e4hneeni miss\u00e4\u00e4n.<\/p>\n

Lyhty oli syntt\u00e4rilahja, joka sai odottaa tulemistaan melkein vuoden, sill\u00e4 minulla on ainutlaatuinen taito tehd\u00e4 yksinkertaisista tarpeista eeppisi\u00e4 tutkimusprojekteja. Olen ainakin oppinut paljon uutta keskiaikaisesta valaistuksesta yritt\u00e4ess\u00e4ni l\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4 sopivaa lyhty\u00e4.<\/p>\n

Ensinn\u00e4kin lyhdyt eiv\u00e4t olleet mik\u00e4\u00e4n yleisin valaistusratkaisu. P\u00e4reet olivat yleisimpi\u00e4, mutta olen liian tulipalokammoinen k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4kseni niit\u00e4 teltassa. Melkein sama p\u00e4tee \u00f6ljylamppuihin, jotka nekin olivat yleisesti k\u00e4ytetty ratkaisu. Tiesittek\u00f6 muuten, ett\u00e4 rannikkoalueilla niiss\u00e4 poltettiin kala\u00f6ljy\u00e4?<\/p>\n

Kynttil\u00e4t olivat ylellinen tuote. Niit\u00e4 valmistettiin keskiajalla talista tai mehil\u00e4isvahasta. Steariinikynttil\u00e4t ovat 1800-luvun juttu.
\nLarsdatterin kaikenkattavalta sivustolta l\u00f6ytyy erilaisia lyhtyj\u00e4<\/a>. Edell\u00e4 mainittuun kammoon liittyen en ole oikein innostunut puisista lyhdyist\u00e4. T\u00e4m\u00e4 tarkennus ja toive 1300-luvun lyhdyst\u00e4 kavensivat valikoimaa merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti.
\nOn t\u00e4m\u00e4 Smithfieldist\u00e4 Englannista l\u00f6ydetty lyhty.<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0 T\u00e4ss\u00e4 sama lyhty viivapiirroksena. <\/a><\/p>\n

Ja sitten on t\u00e4m\u00e4 ns. Arkkipiispa Absolomin lyhty<\/a> joka on Tanskan kansallismuseossa. Se on ajoitettu noin 1300-luvulle. Siin\u00e4 on alun perin ollut todenn\u00e4k\u00f6isesti luinen levy luukkuna. Lyhty on voitu ripustaa sein\u00e4lle tai siin\u00e4 on voinut olla irrotettava kantokahva.<\/p>\n

Tyk\u00e4styin ideaan kahvallisesta lyhdyst\u00e4, sill\u00e4 sit\u00e4 on helpompi kantaa ilman n\u00e4ppien ylikuumenemista.<\/p>\n

Sen j\u00e4lkeen olen pl\u00e4r\u00e4nnyt jokseenkin jokaisen lyhtymaakarin sivut koko netiss\u00e4. Kukaan ei tee suoranaista kopiota tanskalaisesta lyhdyst\u00e4, joten p\u00e4\u00e4dyin tilaamaan lyhdyn jossa on ominaisuuksia molemmista. Malli on tanskalainen, koristeleikkaukset englantilaisesta lyhdyst\u00e4. Mielest\u00e4ni lopputulos on tyydytt\u00e4v\u00e4, kyll\u00e4 t\u00e4ll\u00e4inen lyhty olisi suht uskottavasti voinut olla olemassa keskiajalla. Luulevy voisi olla ohuempikin, mutta koeolosuhteissa lyhdyst\u00e4 l\u00e4hti mukavasti valoa.<\/p>\n

A New Lantern and New Shoes<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today Neulakko turns into a fashion blog (sort of). Instead of showing you what I have made, I’ll show you what I have purchased.<\/p>\n

I received a package from Battle-Merchant<\/a>, which was promptly delivered to my door. Some retailers send things to your door, others to the post office and some to the local supermarket, so it’s always slightly exciting to see where your parcel will end this time.<\/p>\n

The shoes (see picture above) are a pair of\u00c2\u00a0 your basic frontlaced turnshoes. They’re well made, the seams are as they should be. This makes the price (about 50\u00e2\u201a\u00ac) very reasonable. I might add some finishing touches, like remove that odd shapely bit above the heel. At least I’ve never seen that kind of curve on a medieval shoe before.<\/p>\n

The lantern is a birthday present. It arrived almost a year after my birthday, since I have an amazing ability to turn the smallest things into research projects of epic proportions. At least I learned a whole bunch of things about medieval lighting solutions. (Mental note: must turn new knowledge into an article or a lecture)<\/p>\n

Lanterns weren’t the most common means of lighting, but I decided to skip splinters and oil lamps (in a tent!) because of fire safety issues. Btw, did you know that on coastal areas people used fish oil in oil lamps? Fascinating!<\/p>\n

Candles (for lanterns) were more of a posh item. Instead of the paraffine (?) candles we use today, medieval candles were made with tallow or beeswax and one was not supposed to mix these two.<\/p>\n

There are quite some depictions of medieval lanterns, like on this Larsdatter<\/a> page. However, I decided to skip wooden lanterns (due to fire safety). And then I of course needed a 14th century lantern. From Nothern Europe.<\/p>\n

There is a lantern from Smithfield in England.<\/a> (Same one as a line drawing.)
\n<\/a><\/p>\n

And then there is this, the so called lantern of\u00c2\u00a0 Archbishop Absolom,<\/a> which I saw in the National Museum of Denmark. This lantern is also dated to the 14th century and has had a horn panel on the front. It has been attached to a wall or has had a detachable handle.<\/p>\n

I like the concept of these tankard-shaped lanterns. Burning your fingers when carrying them is much less likely.<\/p>\n

After these decisions I surfed practically the entire internet.<\/p>\n

And I came across the lantern I got. It is an emulation, which sort of combines elements from both lanterns.\u00c2\u00a0 I think it is a very plausible option, there could have been such a lantern in the middle ages. The horn panel could maybe be a bit thinner, but when I tried it out, it did give a really good light.<\/p>\n
