Kuinka\u00c2\u00a0olla uskottavampi ja historialle uskollisempi? Itse ajattelen olevani olen menneisyyden ihmisille velkaa sen, ett\u00e4 pyrin parhaani mukaan antamaan realistisen kuvan heid\u00e4n el\u00e4m\u00e4st\u00e4\u00e4n.<\/p>\n<p>T\u00e4ss\u00e4 viisi juttua, joilla aion hioa omaa olemistani vuonna 2015.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>One of the best things about historical re-enactment is the possibility to challenge oneself endlessly: How to give a better portrayal and be as authentic as possible? The way I see it is that what we owe to the people of the past is to give a realistic portrayal of their life.<\/p>\n<p>Here are 5 things I&#8217;ll remind myself of in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>1. Silloin hupsu r\u00f6yhel\u00f6 p\u00e4\u00e4ss\u00e4, kilometrien korkuinen otsa ja kalmankalpeus keskikes\u00e4ll\u00e4 oli juurikin sit\u00e4 mit\u00e4 tavoitellaan. Vieraan aikakauden kauneusk\u00e4sitykseen p\u00e4\u00e4seminen on vaikeaa, mutta v\u00e4h\u00e4n v\u00e4ltt\u00e4m\u00e4t\u00f6nt\u00e4. Kotoa on vaikea poistua jos n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 mielest\u00e4\u00e4n hassulta.<\/p>\n<p>Oikeastaan tunnen itseni aina kauniiksi keskiaikavaatteissa, sill\u00e4 omien mittojen mukaan tehdyt, mainioista luonnonmateriaaleista valmistetut vaatteet ovat niin ihania. Vaikeinta on ollut luopua meikkaamisesta. Olen ihminen joka rakastaa meikkaamista. Minua ei n\u00e4e edes l\u00e4hikaupassa ilman eyelineria, meikkivoidetta, luomiv\u00e4ri\u00e4 ja koko hoitoa. Keskiajalle on kuitenkin ment\u00e4v\u00e4 paljain kasvoin (tiet\u00e4en, ett\u00e4 juuri silloin p\u00e4\u00e4tyy esim. lehteen tai turistien kuva-albumeihin, aaargrh). Mutta se on minulle kasvattavaa, iholle hyv\u00e4ksi ja uskollista historialle.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>A fairly large amount of medieval clothes are not&#8230; ummm&#8230; actually <em>flattering<\/em> according to our current standards of beauty. This is why one should strive to look at yourself through a medieval looking glass. Back then an oddball frill on the top of your head, a super high forehead and being as pale as chalk at midsummer was exactly how things were supposed to be. Getting a deep understanding of the beauty ideals of a foreign time and culture is hard but very nececessary. It&#8217;s hard to leave the house thinking you look funny.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, I feel pretty in medieval clothing, because made to measure clothes in lovely natural materials are just so&#8230;lovely. The hardest thing for me has been giving up makeup. Because I love makeup. I don&#8217;t even go to the corner shop without eyeliner, shadow and the lot. Going medieval means going au naturel (knowing that is exactly when you will be photograpehd by journalists and tourists arghhhhh) But it builds my character, is good for my skin and true to history.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>\u00c2\u00a02. Ei v\u00e4ltt\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00e4 ole ment\u00e4v\u00e4 yht\u00e4 pitk\u00e4lle kuin t\u00e4m\u00e4 l\u00e4piparsituissa\u00c2\u00a0vaatteissa kulkeva pyhiinvaeltaja, mutta vaatteita on hyv\u00e4 kuluttaa ja paikkailla sek\u00e4 materiaalia kierr\u00e4tt\u00e4\u00e4 edelleen uudeksi. On luovuttava siit\u00e4 modernista hassutuksesta, ett\u00e4 vain uusi olisi kaunista. Historiallisuuden lis\u00e4ksi bonuksena on, ettei tylsi\u00e4 juttuja\u00c2\u00a0kuten uusia alusmekkoja ja sukkia ole teht\u00e4v\u00e4 jatkuvasti, vaan voi keskitty\u00e4 \u00c2\u00a0kiinnostavampiin projekteihin. Lis\u00e4ksi paikkaaminen ja kierr\u00e4tys s\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4\u00e4 kangasta ja siten rahaa.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been going on about this before\u00c2\u00a0(see\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.neulakko.net\/?p=1285\">Mending<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0ja\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.neulakko.net\/?p=1513\">I&#8217;ve nothing old to wear<\/a>), but there should be even more mending, patching and recycling! Ok, not necessarily going as far as this pilgrim in his outfit that seems to conisist of nothing but patches &#8211; but still working on dumping the modern idea that only new clothes can be beautiful. There is also an added bonus: saving on material costs and time! No need to be constantly making boring stuff like underdresses and hose &#8211; just patch them up and get into more interesting projects!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>3. Kun katselee aikakauden kuvia, huomaa miten niiss\u00e4 vallitsee vieh\u00e4tt\u00e4v\u00e4 minimalismi. P\u00f6yd\u00e4t eiv\u00e4t pursua astioita, esill\u00e4 on vain tarpeelliset ty\u00f6kalut eik\u00e4 vy\u00f6ll\u00e4 roiku kuin se tarpeellinen (ja hyvin harvoin muuta kuin kukkaro &#8211; valitsin t\u00e4h\u00e4n kuvan jossa on poikkeuksellisen paljon roikottimia).<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>In a way this hobby is all about acquiring and making lovely items &#8211; but you don&#8217;t have to take all of them with you wherever you go. Looking at medieval imagery, a splendid minimalism is visible. Tables are not overflowing with dishes and cups, only necessary tools out when people are working and very few things actually hang on girdles (I picked an image with an exceptional amount of things hanging).<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>4. Halkaise vy\u00f6si \u00c2\u00a0\/ Split your belt in two<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 424px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.neulakko.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_8042.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.neulakko.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_8042.png\" alt=\"IMG_8042.PNG\" width=\"424\" height=\"343\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Effigy of Katherine Mortimer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Vy\u00f6t, varsinkin naisten vy\u00f6t (ja ne vy\u00f6t jotka eiv\u00e4t kannatelleet siis miekkaa), olivat huomattavan kapeita. Niiden arvioidaan yleisimmin olleen jotain noin puolitoista sentti\u00e4 leveydelt\u00e4\u00e4n (ks. mm Dress Accessories) &#8211; t\u00e4m\u00e4 arvio perustuu mm. solkien leveyteen, vy\u00f6maakarien killan s\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00f6ihin ja veistoksiin kuvattujen v\u00f6iden leveyteen. Aikanaan sain kaksi vy\u00f6t\u00e4 yhden hinnalla kun leikkasin halki vanhan vy\u00f6ni ja vaihdoin soljet replikasolkiin. Hyv\u00e4 diili! Nyt olen tosin hankkimassa viel\u00e4kin kapeampaa vy\u00f6t\u00e4.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>Belts, especially women&#8217;s girdles (these swords that were not meant to hold a sword), were surprisingly narrow. It&#8217;s been estimated that they&#8217;ve \u00c2\u00a0commonly been less than 1,5 cm (See Dress Accesories, for one) . This estimate is based on buckles, girdlers regulations and girdles on statues (see above). Once upon a time I cut my belt in half and got two belts from one. Now I&#8217;m looking at getting an even narrower girdle, though.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>5. Initially, I have a touch of guilt about being uninformed about world events, and another parcel of guilt about being out of reach of friends, family, and colleagues. It passes. <strong>What rises instead is a stronger connection with the here and now, with what is happening at this moment in my life, with the people who are physically present.<\/strong> Perhaps this is my favourite thing about trying to live in the past. It seems paradoxical that living in the past makes me live in the present, but it does. Ja se on pienten vieroitusoireiden arvoista.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>Before smartphones it was easier to leave your phone when going to events. But smartphones seem to tag along. We use them to take pictures and share our experience over social networks. But doing that loses one of the best things about living history: the detachment from your everyday life, the modern world, world politics and news feeds. Ditching your smartphone means a stronger connection to the moment you are actually living in and a better presence with the people you are with.
