Villainen huntu p\u00e4\u00e4si Hiidenhirvenhiihdossa tosi koetukselle olosuhteissa joissa se on ehk\u00e4 parhaimmillaan. S\u00e4\u00e4 oli m\u00e4rk\u00e4 ja kolea. Sellainen keli, jossa \u00c2\u00a0tavallinen pellavahuntu imisi itseens\u00e4 ilmasta kaiken kylmyyden ja kosteuden jonka suinkin saisi. Villahuntu ei ollut vedenpit\u00e4v\u00e4, mutta se oli kuiva ja yll\u00e4tt\u00e4v\u00e4n l\u00e4mmin.<\/p>\n

– historiallisuus? – hyvin ohuita villakankaita on valmistettu, joten soveltuvaa samankaltaista materiaalia oli saatavilla, mutta onko sit\u00e4 k\u00e4ytetty huntuna? En ole t\u00e4h\u00e4n menness\u00e4 onnistunut l\u00f6yt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n mainintaa villasta valmistetuista hunnuista (jos joku on, saa kertoa!)<\/p>\n

Pellava<\/h3>\n

+ takuuvarmasti historiallisesti oikea vaihtoehto, pellava on monessa kieless\u00e4 antanut nimenkin naisten p\u00e4\u00e4hineille – esim ruotsiksi huvudlin<\/em><\/p>\n

+ voi taitella vaikka mill\u00e4 tavalla s\u00e4rm\u00e4sti<\/p>\n

+ voi pest\u00e4 (kannattaa pest\u00e4 oikein<\/a>)<\/p>\n

+ n\u00e4ist\u00e4 mukavampi ommeltava, mutta se on makuasia. Palttinasidoksinen pellava ei ainakaan kokemuksen mukaan purkaudu hullun lailla.<\/p>\n

– nihke\u00e4 kylm\u00e4ll\u00e4 ja kostealla kelill\u00e4, imee kosteutta itseens\u00e4<\/p>\n

– menee helposti ruttuun esim hupun sis\u00e4ll\u00e4 varsinkin v\u00e4h\u00e4n kosteana.<\/p>\n

Kuten kuvista huomaa, ulkon\u00e4\u00f6n puolesta t\u00e4mm\u00f6ist\u00e4 ohuenohutta villaa on vaikea erottaa pellavasta. Molemmat materiaalit laskeutuvat kauniisti ja n\u00e4ytt\u00e4v\u00e4t ihan yht\u00e4 hyvilt\u00e4. Eik\u00e4 villahuntu muuten kutita.<\/p>\n

Vaikka pit\u00e4ydynkin enimm\u00e4kseen pellavassa, villahuntu on kiva lis\u00e4 varusteisiin – \u00c2\u00a0varsinkin reissun p\u00e4\u00e4lle sek\u00e4 keljuihin keleihin.<\/p>\n

Sain t\u00e4t\u00e4 Medeltidsmoden villaa<\/a> elokuussa Visbyss\u00e4 pit\u00e4m\u00e4ni huntuluennon j\u00e4lkeen mainittuani etten ollut p\u00e4\u00e4ssyt kokeilemaan villaa hunnun materiaalina. \u00c2\u00a0Ei nyt mik\u00e4\u00e4n blogiyhteisty\u00f6, mutta kerron\u00c2\u00a0kumminkin ett\u00e4 sain t\u00e4t\u00e4 palan testiin Kerstinilt\u00e4.\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The new wool veil was put to test last weekend in conditions that let it really show it’s best qualities. The weather at Hiidenhirvenhiihto here in Helsinki was terrible: wet, humid and chilly. The sort of weather that would make a linen veil absorb all the humidity into itself and be rather cold. The wool veil wasn’t waterproof but it was surprisingly warm and it stayed dry.<\/p>\n

So I made this list of pluses and minuses, a wool vs. linen as a 14th century veil.<\/p>\n

Wool<\/h3>\n

+ Stays dry and warm in wet weather<\/p>\n

+ An excellent veil to travel with: \u00c2\u00a0it didn’t get all wrinkly and wonky in my bag or stuffed into a hood. And once released, it straightened out fairly easily.<\/p>\n

+ Is rather stain-repellent and stains can come off even without washing (This one had crayon on it but it was removed without washing (!))<\/p>\n

+ Does really well without ironing.<\/p>\n

– Not so easy to fold crisply but you can tackle that as you sew (see below)<\/p>\n

– At least this wool frayed at the edges like mad when I was sewing the round edges. So the patience of a saint is required here. (Alternatively, swear a lot)<\/p>\n

– historical correctness? There has been all sorts of thin wool available, but was it used for veils? I have kept an eye out for evidence and still haven’t ran across any. (Has someone else?)<\/p>\n

Linen<\/h3>\n

+ the most undoubtably historically correct material – the material for veils so common it sort of even gave it’s name to veils\/female headress in some languages<\/p>\n

+ folds wonderfully into crisp folds and stays put in all sorts of setups<\/p>\n

+ easy to was (better wash it correctly though<\/a>)<\/p>\n

+ nicer to sew – most tabby woven linen doesn’t fray like this wool did.<\/p>\n

– gets damp in humid\/wet weather and feels iffy<\/p>\n

– gets rather wrinkly easily when stuffed under a veil or when travelling<\/p>\n

And as you can see in the pictures below, the wool veil is visually indistinguisable from the linen veils my friends wear. Both materials look nice and fall nicely. \u00c2\u00a0And no, it’s not itchy.<\/p>\n

So even though I’ll mostly stick to linen (or hemp), a wool veil feels like a good addition to the wardrobe – especially for roughing it, travelling or humid weather.<\/p>\n

My veil is made out of this wool <\/a>which I got a piece of to sample from Medeltidsmode at Visby last year, after mentioning I had never tried making a wool veil. So not a sponsored post (haha) but just wanted to say where I got it and that it was a gift. I like it when bloggers do that.\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Jos haluat tehd\u00e4 huntusi samoilla mitoilla, tarvitset 97 cm x 60 cm palan ohutta valkoista villaa ja ompeluun ohutta<\/strong> pellavalankaa (tai villaa tai silkki\u00e4).<\/p>\n

If you want to use the same measurements as I did, you will need a 97cm x 60 cm piece of thin white wool and thin linen yarn (or wool or silk) to sew with.\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Leikkaa mittojen mukainen kappale (tai isompi tai pienempi, kannattaa mallata peilin edess\u00e4 ettei huntu roiku liian alhaalla ja ole tiell\u00e4 eik\u00e4 my\u00f6sk\u00e4\u00e4n nouse niskasta liian yl\u00f6s. Iso huntu on aina parempi kuin liian pieni, sill\u00e4 isosta saa taiteltua tarvittaessa pienemm\u00e4n)<\/p>\n

Cut out a piece (see helpful diagram above) but do feel out the measurements yourself before. A good size doen’t expose your neck at the back but also doesn’t hang too low in the front and get in the way of everything.\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

(Plus Marialla oli samantyypinen kes\u00e4ll\u00e4 ja se oli kiva!)<\/p>\n

Fold a 6 cm strip from the front edge and sew the fold neatly flat with small stab stitches. *) \u00c2\u00a0Then finish the other end with hem stitches. Roll and hem stitch the round edge (or make a rolled hem). <\/em><\/p>\n

*) I have a personal preference for a neat and flat fold at the veil edge that is closest to my face. I chose the D-shape with the wide fold at the front because I knew this is how I could make the wool sit as flat as I can fold my linen round veils. (Plus Maria had the same style in linen this summer and it looked good)\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
