(jossa minutkin muuten mainitaan sivulla 37, hahaaa!) T\u00e4n\u00e4\u00e4n illalla laitoin kirjan viimein testiin siin\u00e4, mihin se on tarkoitettu ja valmistin sen reseptill\u00e4 ruokaa.<\/p>\n<p>Keskiaikainen illallinen oli hyv\u00e4\u00e4 l\u00e4\u00e4kett\u00e4 vuosisadanvaihtorasituksesta toipumiseen 10 leirip\u00e4iv\u00e4n j\u00e4lkeen. Nuijasodassahan on se, ett\u00e4 leiriviikon hyvien ruokien j\u00e4lkeen kotiruoka maistuu uskomattoman tyls\u00e4lle.<\/p>\n<p>Onneksi nyt t\u00e4h\u00e4n l\u00f6ytyy ratkaisu kovissa kansissa. Saaran k\u00e4denj\u00e4lki n\u00e4kyy sek\u00e4 leirin ruokalistassa ett\u00e4 keskiaikaharrastajan keittokirjassa (muiden keittokirjailijoiden rinnalla), joten samoja herkkumakuja voi maistella kotonakin. (Jossa lattiasta ei puske kastematoja eik\u00e4 se sano squish squish, mik\u00e4 on ihan kiva.)<\/p>\n<p>Kuten kuvasta n\u00e4kyy, tein kirjan mukaan lohta saksanp\u00e4hkin\u00e4kastikkeessa ja lisukkeena tarjosin hernemuhennosta. V\u00e4linein\u00e4 oli tavallinen keitti\u00f6 ja aivan tavallisen Valintatalon antimet. Siin\u00e4 ollaankin Keskiaikaharrastajan keittokirjan parhaudessa: reseptien ainekset l\u00f6ytyv\u00e4t ihan tavallisista kaupoista. Monien keskiaikakeittokirjojen heikkoutena ovat ainekset, joita joutuu mets\u00e4st\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n kauppahalleista ja etnisist\u00e4 kaupoista, joita kaikilla ei ole kulmillaan. Lis\u00e4ksi on mahtavaa, ett\u00e4 ohjeissa ei vaadita 30 eri ruoka-ainetta vaan maut voi koostaa paljon lyhyemm\u00e4ll\u00e4 ostoslistalla. T\u00e4m\u00e4 sopii minulle, sill\u00e4 kotikokkina teen ateriat yleens\u00e4 melko pienell\u00e4 ennakkosuunnittelulla. Teen siksi ostokset yleens\u00e4 marketeista joissa on joustavat aukioloajat mutta heikohko valikoima.<\/p>\n<p>Alkuper\u00e4isiin reseptil\u00e4hteisiin verrattuna kirjassa on se kotikokkia helpottava etu, ett\u00e4 alkuper\u00e4isten reseptien ylimalkaisuus &#8221;ota saksanp\u00e4hkin\u00f6it\u00e4 ja v\u00e4h\u00e4n valkosipulia&#8221; on muutettu desilitroiksi, teelusikallisiksi ja muiksi t\u00e4sm\u00e4llisiksi ohjeiksi. Ja kaikkea t\u00e4t\u00e4 komistavat herkulliset ja hauskat kuvat. Keskiaikaharrastajalle keittokirja toimii samalla selailukirjana, jolla kelpaa esitell\u00e4 vaikka sukulaisille omaa harrastustaan.<\/p>\n<p>Lohesta saksanp\u00e4hkinakastikkeessa (s. 83) hernemuhennoksella (s. 85) tuli hurjan hyv\u00e4\u00e4! Suosikkini oli saksanp\u00e4hkin\u00e4kastike, jota tein rohkeasti 10 hengen annoksen. Soosi oli niin hyv\u00e4\u00e4, ett\u00e4 s\u00f6imme sen kahdestaan melkein kokonaan. Sen 1400-luvun englannista per\u00e4isin oleva resepti l\u00f6ytyy my\u00f6s <a href=\"http:\/\/lethemboyle.com\/reseptit\/1400-luku\/sauce-for-stockfysshe-in-another-maner-saksanpahkinakastike\/\">Let hem boylesta t\u00e4\u00e4lt\u00e4.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>I have been going on about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salakirjat.net\/keskiaikaharrastajan_keittokirja.html\">the cookbook <\/a>my friends have put out (which mentions me on page 37, oh the fame!) for quite the while already, but tonight I finally put to book to it&#8217;s inteded use and used it to make dinner.<\/p>\n<p>A medieval dinner helped in adjusting from the time warp I took yesterday, returning from 10 days of camping at Cudgel War. And while I enjoy lots of things like the floor not going squish or pushing out earthworms, I do miss the food. The food at Cudgel is so yummy, that returning home everything tastes a bit blah.<\/p>\n<p>But this is where the cookbook steps in! Saara\/Eva, who is one of the authors of the book is also behind the menus at Cudgel, so I can now take the same taste palette home too.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see in the picture above, I made salmon and walnut sauce and a pea mush as a side dish. I used a regular kitchen and very easily obtainable ingredients from the supermarket around the corner. That is one of the things I like best about the book: all the ingredients are easily available, even to those that have no farmers markets or ethnic stores close by. Many other medieval cookbooks have a much more complicated ingredient list. And the recipes are simple &#8211; no 30 different things required, but just a few that go ah so well together. This is good for me, since I like to cook and design dinners on a whim and usually rely on the selection of supermarkets with flexible opening hours.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to the actual medieval recipes, the vagueness of the instructions &#8221;take a few walnuts and garlic&#8221; has been transformed into more accurate measurements like deciliters and teaspoons that guarantee tasty results.<\/p>\n<p>And it does have lovely pictures too &#8211; not only of food but also of cooking and living the medieval way. For any medievalist, it does double duty as a coffee table book that you can use to introduce friends or relatives to your hobby.<\/p>\n<p>The food turned out very yummy! My absolute favourite was the walnut sauce &#8211; I made a portion that is said to be for ten, but we nearly finished it although we were just two people at the table! The recipe comes from 15th century England.
