Mutta pienell\u00e4 penkomisella l\u00f6ysin kyll\u00e4 riitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti vastaavia esimerkkej\u00e4 saman aikakauden taiteesta, joten aivan taiteilijan mielikuvituksesta rev\u00e4istyst\u00e4 jutusta ei ole kyse. Mutta mit\u00e4 vihre\u00e4\u00e4n pukeutuneen naisen kyljess\u00e4 on, sit\u00e4 en tosiaan osaa sanoa!<\/p>\n<p>Olen tutkiskellessani l\u00f6yt\u00e4nyt useamman ihanan k\u00e4sikirjoituksen, jotka l\u00f6ytyv\u00e4t kokonaan tai l\u00e4hes kokonaan verkosta. Aikasemmin olen n\u00e4hnyt niist\u00e4 kaikista vain irrallisia kuvia, mutta on aina niin paljon parempi n\u00e4hd\u00e4 kokonainen k\u00e4sikirjoitus. Aina n\u00e4hdess\u00e4ni jotain inspiroivaa ensin vertaan sit\u00e4 muuhun k\u00e4sikirjoitukseen &#8211; poikkeaako se tyylist\u00e4, millainen koko teoksen tyyli on, mist\u00e4 k\u00e4sikirjoitus kertoo, liittyyk\u00f6 kuvitus siihen, kenell\u00e4 vaate on. Sen j\u00e4lkeen vertaan niit\u00e4 muuhun samanaikaiseen ja suurinpiirtein saman alueen materiaaliin, sek\u00e4 taiteeseen ett\u00e4 mahdollisiin arkeologisiin l\u00f6yt\u00f6ihin.<\/p>\n<p>T\u00e4ss\u00e4 iloksenne ja inspiraatioksenne kolme maanmainiota linkki\u00e4:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/tudigit.ulb.tu-darmstadt.de\/show\/Hs-2505\/0089\">Speculum humaniae salvationis Saksasta.<\/a> Se on tavallaan kuin 20 suosikkia- versio Raamatun tarinoista, jossa mukana ovat mehevimm\u00e4t ja usein aika v\u00e4kivaltaiset tarinat. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 on my\u00f6s kauniita huntuja, tosin vailla r\u00f6yhel\u00f6it\u00e4.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>****<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m deep into study mode right now. I seem to work in cycles &#8211; first browsing different sources, finding something that sparks my interest, looking deeper into it and finally making it. Right now I have set my sights on making a collar and a certain dress, inspired by the picture above. The red overdress with the dagged sleeves and buttons all the way.<\/p>\n<p>The sleeves are exciting and a bit of a rarity &#8211; but nothing so rare that I couldn&#8217;t find some other contemporary examples of. So they seem not to be completely made up by the artist behind the manuscript. But what the lady in green has going on under her arm I cannot seem to figure out!<\/p>\n<p>In my browsing, I&#8217;ve come across several &#8221;new&#8221; manuscript sites, on works I had only seen a few pictures of. It is always so much better to have the entire manuscript (or at least more than just one picture) to work from.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever I see something interesting, I start by comparing it to the rest of the picures in the manuscript &#8211; how does it compare with the styles, what does the clothing in the entire piece look like compared to contemporary stuff, what the MS is about, do the illustrations go with the text and who is wearing the interesting piece. After that I compare it with other contemporary sources of all kinds, from manuscripts to sculpture to archaeological pieces.<\/p>\n<p>Here are three enjoyable and inspiring links I have found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/tudigit.ulb.tu-darmstadt.de\/show\/Hs-2505\/0089\">Speculum humaniae salvationis<\/a> from Germany. These manuscripts were a kind of a best of- version of the Bible, with the juiciest and quite often very violent stories. The picture above is a good example. It shows Lamech tormented by his two wives Ada and Sella. Note the frilly veils!<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bodley30.bodley.ox.ac.uk:8180\/luna\/servlet\/s\/5g3ey3\">Roman de la Rose<\/a>, a lovely MS on a French poem about a very allegorical dream.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bl.uk\/catalogues\/illuminatedmanuscripts\/record.asp?MSID=6549&amp;CollID=16&amp;NStart=100504\">Smithfield Decretals<\/a> Noteworthy things: pictures of textile work &#8211; spinning and combing fibers and some spinning wheels too!
