Kaiken ihanan laina-rautakautisuuden (on se Sahra <\/a>taitava!) lis\u00e4ksi viime viikonloppuna kuvattiin keskiaikavaatteitakin. Elizabeth Luttrell-huppu<\/a> p\u00e4\u00e4si paremmin oikeuksiinsa keskiaikaisten vaatteiden kanssa. Oravaa ei t\u00e4ll\u00e4k\u00e4\u00e4n kertaa l\u00f6ytynyt mukaan, mutta rintapieless\u00e4 killuu sent\u00e4\u00e4n pieni joutsen.<\/p>\n

On hauskaa saada vihdoin asu samasta kankaasta! Keskiajan vaatehankinnoille oli nimitt\u00e4in tyypillist\u00e4 hankkia kerralla enemm\u00e4n kangasta ja teett\u00e4\u00e4 siit\u00e4 useampia vaatekappaleita.\u00c2\u00a0 Se johtui siit\u00e4 ett\u00e4 esimerkiksi tuontiverka myytiin suurina paloina, eik\u00e4 kangaskaupoilla v\u00e4ltt\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00e4 mittailtu ja leikelty pieni\u00e4 palasia kuten nyky\u00e4\u00e4n. Samasta palasta voitiin tilata vaikka koko vaatekerta: parikin mekkoa, viitta ja vaikka viel\u00e4 huppu. In addition to all the lovely borrowed Iron Age bling (Sahra<\/a> who made all that is so awesomely talented!) there was also some medieval shenanigans going on last weekend.<\/p>\n

The\u00c2\u00a0Elizabeth Luttrell<\/a> hood finally got worn with the right kind of clothing. No Squirrel this time either, only my trusty swan badge.<\/p>\n

I’m happy to finally have an outfit from the same fabric. I’ve noted that when it comes to medieval clothing aquisitions (at least the documented ones) it seems to be fairly typical that a larger quantity of fabric was bought andseveral items, even a full set of clothes would be ordered at the same time from that same fabric: even as much as two dresss, a hood\u00c2\u00a0 and a cloak. This can be because broadcloth was often sold in larger pieces (much like a hide of leather, where you couldn’t get 20 cm’s if you wanted) and then the piece was big enough for several items at a time. Now whether all the pieces were worn at the same time is not certain, but sometimes you see outfits in just one colour like Elizabeth Lutrell with her squirrel.<\/p>\n

Since the last time you saw it, I have added pocket slits to my pink dress. These predecessors of pockets are vary necessary. With them, you can easily access your purse or needlecase or other necessary item that hangs on your girdle. The Greenland dresses usually have the slits cut into the sides, but I cut mine on the front piece, so that they would be more similar in style to my original inspiration<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The thing with pocket slits is hat there is something terribly.. well.. lewd<\/em> about them and their shape. And hey, in swedish they are called fickslitsar,\u00c2\u00a0 <\/em>which pretty\u00c2\u00a0 much makes me rest my case. So once we could stop giggling, we took a few closeup pics of the said fitchets, where you can see the edging with a 5-loop fingerlooped braid, like on the Greenland originals. It makes for an excellent finish. Since the wool was thick enough not to fray, so I could put the braid directly on the edge of the cut. This way the slits sort of close themselves when not used and there isn’t any of that annoying gape, which you can have with slits sometimes. I also used the braid to finish the sleeves, so they are nice and neat to turn up.<\/p>\n

In the last picture you can see me doing my amazing effigy impersonation (trying out these poses really brings out the silliness and then it is very hard to pull the grumpy face which is necessary to get the right look).<\/p>\n

When wearing the little hood, you cannot really wear another hood with more of a\u00c2\u00a0 shoulder cape. So I had to take out my cloak. It is old and kind of worn, but I can’t see myself replacing it soon either. This is because I\u00c2\u00a0 find cloaks so very impractical. If I was a man, I’d be happy to wear a short cloak I could fasten on my shoulder. But as a woman I’m stuck with this style. And it is all great until you want to do something else besides hold the effigy position. Then chaos breaks loose. So I’m still looking for that practical way to wear a cloak. I tried to fasten it with some brooches, but they were too small.Bah.<\/p>\n
