Lähteenä saa käyttää väritöntä kuvaa, mutta käyttämillesi väreille on löydyttävä muu todiste niiden käytöstä ko. aikana, esimerkiksi kemiallinen väriaineanalyysi Birkan hautalöydöistä tms.
2. Julkaise kuva ja kerro minkä asun aiot tehdä.
3. Tee valitsemasi kuvan mukainen asu, sellaisena kuin se näkyy lähdekuvassa. Tee KOKO asu kaikkine osineen! Mahdollisesti samassa kuvassa näkyvien ihmisten asujen osia ei saa sekoittaa.
4. Anna muiden seurata projektisi etenemistä! Lataa kuvia projektisi vaiheista, jaa ajatuksiasi ja muistiinpanoja. Bloggaa haasteesta!
5. Pyydä apua, vinkkejä ja neuvoja, jos tuntuu siltä. Muut osallistujat ovat tukenasi – tarvittaessa auttamassa ja piristämässä jos tulee vastoinkäymisiä!

Thank you for all the lovely comment entries for the book competition! I think it’s fantastic to see how many of them echo that it is not only a matter of what you eat, but where you eat and with whom. The people you share your table with, the sounds of the camp around you and the smoke from the open fires.
The comments were so lovely that I couldn’t choose, not even with the help of the authors – so we decided to draw a random number. Also, the authors loved your replies so much that they donated another book! So today we have two very lucky winners.

Telttameitsie! Ja muutama huntutyyli! / Tent selfie! And a few veil styles!
Tänä viikonloppuna vietetään Hollolassa keskiaikatapahtumaa jo kymmenennen kerran! Tällä kertaa paikalla on myös 1300-lukuun keskittyvä sotaleiri. Sotimisen lisäksi leirissämme voi saada helpotusta keskiaikaisiin tyyliongelmiinsa – koskivat ne sitten mekkoja, kankaita tai päähineitä.
Minulla on ilo pitää vastaanottoa yhdessä mekkoekspertti Christine Carnien ja kangasasiantuntija Maria Neijmanin kanssa. Elinan huntuklinikalla saa vinkkejä hunnun pitämisestä päässä tyylikkäästi ja pysyvästi – oma huntu ja neuloja kannattaa ottaa mukaan. Demonstroin myös muutamien huntutyylien pukemista.
Vastaanottomme palvelee Hollolassa la-su klo 10-13 (tauko sotatoimien ajan).

This weekend it is time for Hollola’s very own medieval event, which is on for the 10th time! This time there will also be a 14th century war camp. Besides war, we will be hosting a clinic for all those with medieval fashion/clothing woes.
The clinic is open 10-13 on Saturday and Sunday (with a break for war).
Dress specialist Christine Carnie will help with dress-related things  and fabric connoisseur Maria Neijman will answer fabric questions. I will give tips and hands on help to keep your veils looking good and also stay put. Bring your own veils plus pins! I will also hold how to-demonstrations of a couple of styles.
Perhaps I will demo the styles in the tentselfies! (The whole tentselfie thing happened when I was camping and first used my phone as a mirror. Then I took a selfie. Then it just got out of hand.)
My friends cook book for medievalists – orginally called Sahramia, munia ja mantelimaitoa has just been published in English. I have received a signed copy of that I will pass on to one fortunate reader (one that doesn’t know Finnish).
The book is a delightful compilation of tried and tested medieval recipes that are easy to cook almost anywhere – at home or in your own encampment.
Since the book features food that has been a part of my favourite medieval food experiences, I would like to hear about your favourite food moments!

Taas on se aika vuodesta, kun Turku palaa keskiajalle ja Iloinen Joutsen on paikalla! Olin markkinoilla vain torstain ja perjantain, koska en halua olla poikasesta erossa yhtään pidempään. Tässä lomakuviani lyhyeltä visiitiltäni. Kiitos ja pus kaikille, oli kiva nähdä tuttuja pitkästä aikaa.
It’s that time of year again – Turku goes medieval with the annual medieval market and Merry Swan goes to market. I was there only on Thursday and Friday, because I can’t really be away from the small person that much yet. Here are some snapshots from my short visit. All in all it was lovely to see people, it had been too long!
Markkinaomenan syönti – meitsie. Markkinoiden perinteinen ruokaympyrä koostuu puoliksi omenoista ja puoliksi manteleista. Muutenkin meno oli perinteinen: oli sahtitupaa, niitä puolalaisia kauppiaita, tuttuja suomalaisia kauppiaita, markkinanäytelmää ja tietenkin meidän oma räätälikojumme, joka koostui työnäytöskatoksesta ja kauppateltasta. Aika toimiva yhdistelmä!
Suosikkikeskiaikabändini Räikkä julkaisi uuden levyn. Se on hilpeä ja sisältää monta jo tutuksi tullutta hittiä kuten munalaulun ja sen yhden  hanhenkaulasta kertovan.

Candied apple -selfie! Traditional market food consists 50% of candied apples, 50% of candied almonds. In other ways the market had all the traditional elements: there was the polish guys, the play and the alehouse – and of course our own tailor shop, which consisted of a working area under a sunhade and a shop in a small tent. A pretty functional combo, I think!
My favourite medieval band Räikkä has a new album out! It includes many of their hits – and comes with an english translation too. Buy it and know what the soft and supple necks of geese are best for!
Minulla oli markkinoilla samat vanhat vaatteet. Uutta oli ainoastaan se, että ohimoletit olivat pitkästä aikaa omaa tukkaa ja ennen niin hyvin istunut vaaleanpunainen mekko on nyt löpsyvän löysä. Sitä on räätälöitävä kasaan.
My outfit was pretty much the same old stuff. The only new things were that my own hair is long enough to wear in templar braids and that my dear previously very well fitting pink dress is now super loose. I have to take it in.
Torstaina järejstetiin TUCEMEMSin seminaari, jossa kävimme kuuntelemassa Heini Kirjavaisen esitelmän Turun tuomiokirkosta löytyneestä mekonkappaleesta, joka on todennäköisimmin ollut pyhimyspatsaan vaate. Superkiinnostavaa! Ylipäänsä odotan Kirjavaisen väitöskirjaa keskiajan Turun tekstiileistä aivan intopiukeana.

We went to the TUCEMEMs seminar to listen to Heini Kirjavainen’s paper on the dress relic found in Turku cathedral. It has most likely been a dress worn by a statue of a saint. Super interesting! I’m anxiously waiting for her doctorate on medieval textile finds from Turku.
After the market it’s a hard days night and we’ve been working like a dog.
We usually come together and have a good meal in our favourite place in Turku. When we walked back through the quiet streets we saw an opportunity for some pop culture references. I am, however, not the walrus.

TUCEMEMS järjestää Turun Keskiaikaisilla markkinoilla torstaina 26.6.2014 klo 12 alkaen suurtorin Vanhalla Raatihuoneella (Vanha Suurtori 5, Turku) päiväseminaarin matkustamisesta ja liikkumisesta keskiajalla ja uuden ajan alussa. seminaarin ohjelma ja abstraktit täältä.
Viikonloppu Tukholmassa kera Iloisen Joutsenen Rikun ja Mervin oli mainio! Historiska museetissa kannattaa käydä katsomassa uusi vaikuttava näyttely Visbyn taistelusta. Oli kiva päästä keskiaikailemaan pitkästä aikaa, nähdä kavereita ja saada uusia ideoita sekä vaikutteita.
Itselleni mieleenpainuvinta oli kuitenkin oman pojan debyytti  museoesineenä keskiaikavaatteissa. Söpöys, se polttaa!

We – me, Riku and Mervi of the Merry Swan – had a great weekend in Stockholm (Sweden)! The new exhibit on the Battle of Visby – more accurately translated as the massacre at the town wall – is definately worth seeing. I enjoyed doing medieval stuff for the first time in a long while, seeing friends and getting new ideas and influences.
But the most memorable thing all weekend was seeing my son debut as a museum exhibit, wearing medieval clothes for the first time. The cute, it burns!
Kotona oli hieman harjoiteltu sitä, mitä ”Ã„lä härkkää äidin huntuja” tarkoittaa. Ja hyvinhän se meni! Pojan oma myssy ei ehtinyt valmistua, mutta tekemäni mekko ja pienet sukat tulivat sopivasti kierrätettynä edelliseltä käyttäjältä. Paita oli sentään uusi.
Museoesineenä ei tietenkään voinut räpsiä valokuvia ja esiintyä samaan aikaan, mutta tässä muutama muilta saamani kuva. Lisää kuvia on Mervin kirjoituksessa Hibiksessä ja kuvia tulee varmaankin myös museon sivuille.

We had practiced a bit at home – namely what ”Don’t hang on mum’s headress.” Â omeans and why. And it all went well! His own headress didn’t get finished in time, but a small dress I had made and these tiny hose came just in time from their previous user. The shirt was brand new.Â
As I was busy being a museum exhibit I couldn’t take any pictures, but here are a few I have gotten from others. You can see more on Mervi’s post and possibly the museum will also post some more.Â

Lauantai kului museoesineenä museon goottilaisessa salissa, jossa elävöittäjät tekivät käsitöitä ja kertoivat keskiajasta kävijöille. Oli nauhojen kutomista, puu- ja metallitöitä, kirjontaa ja muuta! Itse istuin ompelupöydässä Mikaelin ja Majan kanssa.
Ruotsalainen museoyleisö oli aavistuksen uteliaampaa kuin suomalainen, kävijät tulivat koskettelemaan ja kyselemään rohkeasti! Museo oli saanut hyvää palautetta näyttelyn elävöittämisestä oikeilla ihmisillä. Itse annoin hyvää palautetta itselleni siitä, että osasin sittenkin edelleen puhua ruotsia pitkän tauon jälkeen.
Käsitöiden lisäksi yleisölle oli tarjolla taistelu- ja muotinäytöstä, joista jälkimmäiseen osallistuimme. Mervin blogissa on siitä kuvia. Olin sitä varten laittanut pyynnöstä oikein parempaa päälle. Röyhelöhunnun alla on otsapanta johon ehdin ennen matkaa kiinnittää uudet hopeoidut ja emaloidut  mittatilauskukkaset. Ne viimeistelivät sen hienosti!

Saturday was spent in the gothic hall as a museum piece. About 30 re-enactors were doing their crafts and answering visitors questions. There was weaving, embroidery, metalwork and woodwork – just to name a few things! I sat at the sewing table with Mikael and Maja.Â
Swedish museum visitors were a bit more talkative and eager to ask things than finns. They came up to you and asked questions and touched your stuff. I was happy to hear the public had been happy with the exhibit and especially the re-enactor bit livening up the exhibition and the museum had gotten lots of good feedback. I gave myself good feedback on the fact that it turned out that I can still speak swedish enough to function at a display like this!Â
There were also shows – fighting and a fashion show. I had worn some of my sunday best because I was participating in the latter. I had just reworked my circlet with the silver plated enamel flowers that had arrived just in time before we left. I think they finished off the circlet really nicely!Â
Itse Massakern vid muren -näyttely oli vaikuttava elämys. Onneksi meille oli järjestetty sunnuntaina oma kierros, sillä lauantaina ei olisi sinne tungokselta mahtunut eikä tunnelman luomiselta ehtinyt.
Näyttely koostui kolmesta huoneesta. Ensimmäisessä taustoitettiin historiallista tilannetta, joka johti verilöylyyn kaupungin muurilla. Toisessa huoneessa kävijä joutuu suoraan taistelun keskelle: seinillä pyörii ääntä ja kuvaa taistelun ennallistuksesta, vitriineissä on esillä haarniskoita ja taistelussa menehtyneiden jäännöksiä. Pakokauhu ja julmuus tulee iholle. Kurkkua kuristaa lukiessa jäännösten kertomia tarinoita väkivaltaisesta kuolemasta. Â Kolmas huone esittelee kaivauksia ja uutena näkökulmana tekstiilipuolta! Siellä roikkuu kaiken kansan hiplattavana ihana Bockstenin miehen tunika, jonka kankaan Maria Neijman on kutonut joukkohaudasta löytyneen kangaskappaleen pohjalta. Lisäksi tutkittavana on kangasnäytteitä, kypärä ja paljon muuta. Menkää katsomaan!

On Sunday we had a special tour of the Massakern vid muren – exhibition. Good thing that, since on Saturday we were too busy and the exhibit too crowded.Â
The exhbition is spread over three rooms. First you get to know about the historical events that led to the battle. In the second room you are thrown into battle! Films from the re-enacted battle run on both walls, you can hear the shouting and the clatter of armour and see the horses. There are some remains and armour on display. The brutality of battle really gets to you, especially when reading the stories of violent death the remains can tell. The third room showcases the excavations and – gives new info on the textile matter excavated! There is even a delightful dress/tunic/kjortel that has been woven by Maria Neijman, based on textile fragments from the mass grave. You can try on helmets, lift swords and learn a lot! Go see it, if you can!Â

Vaatteiden sopivuus on ensiarvoisen tärkeää, sillä suuntaamme pian Iloisen Joutsenen Mervin ja Rikun kanssa Tukholman Historiska Museetiin Visbyn taistelusta 1361 kertovan näyttelyn avajaisiin (samma pÃ¥ svenska). Otsikon verilöyly on siis se kuuluisa tanskalaisten ja gotlantilaisten Visbyn muurin ulkopuolella huipentunut taistelu, jonka uhrit haudattiin joukkohautoihin. Näiden hautojen kaivausten löydöt ovat esillä näyttelyssä, tulossa on myös uusia analyysejä näistä tunnetuista löydöistä. Avajaisissa 1300-luvun elämää esitellään myös työnäytöksissä, joihin meidät kutsuttiin osallistumaan. Hauskaa!
Ohjelmassa on myös muotinäytös, jonka takia ehdin olla etvaksen jännittynyt siitä, että mitä jos mikään vaatteeni ei mahdukaan. Mutta onneksi keskiaikamekkoon voi luottaa! Ne näyttävät edelleen ihan järkeviltä, vaikka näistä kuvista onkin lähtenyt reilu 20 kiloa. Ainoa suurempi menetys on (koska raskauskilojen lisäksi lähti myös muuta painoa) palavyön muuttuminen niin suureksi, että se valuu lanteilta alas. Buu.
Osa teistä varmaankin muistaa vielä lupaamani lettiohjeen. Se on edelleen tulossa! Otin ohjetta varten kuvia tammikuun alussa, mutta siihen aikaan vuodesta on hurjan huono valaistus, joten en ole kuviin oikein tyytyväinen. Kuvat piti ottaa uudelleen, mutta pian sen jälkeen hiukset alkoivat pudota päästä (ei hätää, se on normaalia) ja juuri nyt ohimoleteistäni tulisi takuulla surkeat suiperot. Olen arponut asiaa suuntaan ja toiseen, mutta päädyin siihen että teen ohjeen niillä huonoilla kuvilla.
Ps. Matkapuvustokin on hyvässä jamassa, sillä Iloisella Joutsenella on hieno jengipuvusto Porukkapaidasta!

This is me, trying on my medieval clothes for the first time in a loooooong while!
Having clothes that fit is essential, since I am, together with fellow Merry Swans Riku and Mervi, participating in the opening ceremonies of  a new exhibition at the Historiska Museet (Historical museum) in Stockholm, Sweden! The exhibition is called Medieval Massacre and it is about the famous battle of Wisby in 1361. The one where the danes fought the people on Gotland and many people ended up buried in the mass graves. The excavations from these graves are presented in the exhibition, with some interesting new research too. At the opening 14th century life is also illustrated via living history displays. This is what we have been invited to do. Fantastic!
There will also be a fashion show, which means that having clothes that fit is sort of essential. I was really worried that nothing would fit anymore, since I have lost more than 20 kilos since these pictures were taken. Good old medieval dresses! One can always count on them to live up to changes in life and figure. So far, the only real loss (besides twice amount of kilos I gained when pregnant, go figure) seems to be that my plaque belt is now so big it falls off my hips. Booo.
All of this TMI also has to do with the templar braid tutorial I promised. It is still in the works! I took pictures in early January, but the light was so bad they turned out not all that good. Soon after, my hair started falling out (it’s completely normal). So now my templars are puny little things compared to their usual thickness. I’ve gone back and forth thinking about what to do, but now I have decided to try work with the poor quality pictures and go ahead with the tutorial anyway. So stay tuned.
